Job description

What You’ll Do:

As the Director Commercial Strategy & Solutions Engineering, you will lead a team responsible for the commercial development as well as the technical scoping (Solutions Engineering) of Spire’s Space Services deals globally. Combining the two functions, you will be responsible for developing Spire Services’ commercial strategy and executing on it in the deal process. This includes managing and improving the deal governance: process, reviews, and tools. This role is based in Glasgow or Munich and will require you to be in the office 3x per week.

Commercial Strategy:

  • Lead proposals and competitive tenders, ensuring strong positioning in the market
  • Support pricing strategy to maximize competitiveness and profitability
  • Develop and present compelling commercial value propositions to customers
  • Manage contract negotiations in collaboration with the Sales and Legal teams
  • Oversee financial and deal review governance, working closely with Sales and Finance

Solution Management:

  • Lead solution development, including technical presentations to customers
  • Drive the design and costing process, generating accurate engineering estimates
  • Oversee deal technical reviews to ensure feasibility and alignment with customer needs

Product Strategy:

  • Translate market demand and Spire’s technical capabilities into product offerings and pricing strategies
  • Feed technology roadmaps based on customer demand and market trends
  • Act as the voice of the customer, representing market needs within the product strategy group.

Who You Are:

You are a seasoned commercial and technical leader with a strong foundation in the aerospace, satellite, or defense sectors. With approximately 15 years of experience spanning engineering, solution development, and deal-making, you bring deep expertise in leading complex, high-value proposals from initial concept through to contract negotiation and closure. You excel at translating customer needs into compelling technical and commercial offerings, and have successfully led cross-functional teams through high-stakes pursuits, often in competitive and fast-moving markets. Your background combines technical credibility—ideally in mission design or systems engineering—with commercial acumen and a strategic mindset, allowing you to influence pricing strategies, product roadmaps, and market positioning. As a confident communicator and collaborator, you're skilled at simplifying complex ideas for senior stakeholders, managing ambiguity, and ensuring solutions are both innovative and executable. You're ready to lead and shape Spire’s global strategy in one of its most critical and dynamic business areas.

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant Engineering discipline (e.g. Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical)
  • Experience in Aerospace Commercial / deal-making e.g. as bid manager, commercial manager
  • Technical background in Space / Aviation / Defense e.g. as systems engineer, solution manager
  • Direct customer-facing and negotiation experience
  • Around 15 years total experience
  • Team management experience
  • Very strong communicator, verbal and written, can simplify complex issues to enable decision-making
  • Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships with customers and effectively communicating with other members of cross-functional teams
  • Ability to work with uncertainties, highly dynamic work environment
  • Nice to have: Experience in satellite mission design, development, and testing with a clear understanding of major mission design trades and scope drivers
