Job description

Job Summary:

The purpose of this role is to assist GPs and the nursing team in delivering safe, high-quality primary care services to the practice population. The post holder will undertake delegated tasks under indirect supervision of the practice GP and nursing team, working within clear parameters and lines of accountability after appropriate training and competence assessment. The competence requirements align with Band 3 of the District and General Practice Nursing Service Education and Career Framework (Health Education England).

Main duties of the job:
Clinical care delivery
  • Undertake and record urinalysis, specimen preparation, vital signs, BMI, leg measurements for compression hosiery, ECGs, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, near patient testing (blood glucose, lipids), venous blood sampling.
  • Administer vaccines and medications by injection following legal and clinical guidelines.
  • Carry out wound care, including dressing application, removal of sutures, clips, staples, and assist with minor surgical procedures.
  • Facilitate NHS Health Checks, foot checks for diabetic patients, and annual pre-diabetic reviews.
Administrative and service support
  • Manage clinical supplies, monitor stock levels, and maintain equipment.
  • Participate in quality improvement activities such as audits and protocol development.
  • Attend and contribute to practice and clinical meetings to develop nursing services and practice systems.
Confidentiality

Maintain patient confidentiality and handle sensitive information in accordance with practice policies, ensuring privacy and data protection at all times.

Health & Safety

Promote health and safety in the workplace, follow security procedures, identify and report risks, maintain tidy and hazard-free work areas, and adhere to infection control protocols.

Person Specification:
Experience
  • Essential: Experience as a healthcare assistant, preferably in primary care, with the ability to manage multiple systems efficiently.
  • Desirable: Experience working with healthcare professionals or within the NHS.
Qualifications
  • Essential: NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care, qualified in Phlebotomy.
  • Desirable: Care Certificate, NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care.
