JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher
Regulations

(Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5

  1. Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher, other than a principal, shall carry out professional duties as required:

  • (a) when employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
  • (b) when employed by a board on terms where they are not assigned to a specific school, under the reasonable direction of that board and the principal of any school they may be required to work in.
  1. Exercise of particular duties

Teachers shall perform specific duties as reasonably directed by the principal or the employing authority, including but not limited to planning, teaching, assessment, student guidance, staff development, discipline, examination arrangements, management activities, and administrative tasks.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Planning
  • Developing courses and lessons;
  • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs;
  • Assessing and reporting on pupils' progress.
  1. General Duties
  • Promoting pupils' progress and well-being;
  • Providing advice and guidance;
  • Recording and reporting needs;
  • Communicating with parents and external bodies;
  • Participating in meetings.
  1. Assessment/Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils.

  1. Staff Development

Participating in staff development schemes, reviewing teaching methods, and engaging in professional training.

  1. Discipline/Health and Safety

Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety in accordance with policies.

  1. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for examinations, assessing, and supervising during exams.

  1. Management and Administration

Contributing to staff appointments, managing colleagues' work, and participating in curriculum and organizational development.

  1. Working Hours

Full-time teachers shall work 195 days per year, with specific hours and breaks as detailed, including not more than 25 teaching hours per week in primary schools.

  1. Staff Cover

Providing cover for absent colleagues within specified conditions based on school size and policies.

Section 3 - Desirable Criteria
  • Experience with ICT in schools, curriculum coordination, ECO Schools, and residential trips.
