JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Professional Duties of a Teacher

Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987

  1. Exercise of general professional duties

    A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as required, under the reasonable direction of the principal or the employing board, including any substitute or temporary roles.

  2. Exercise of particular duties

    Teachers shall perform duties reasonably assigned by the principal or the board, including planning, teaching, assessment, guidance, and participation in school meetings.

Specific Responsibilities
  1. Planning
    • Developing and preparing courses and lessons.
    • Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work.
    • Assessing and reporting on pupils' development and progress.
  2. General
    • Promoting pupils' well-being and progress.
    • Providing advice on educational and social matters and future careers.
    • Making records and reports on pupils' personal and social needs, communicating with parents, and collaborating with external bodies.
  3. Assessment/Reporting

    Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils, maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.

  4. Staff Development
    • Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
    • Reviewing and developing teaching methods and participating in training.
  5. Discipline/Health and Safety
    • Maintaining discipline and safeguarding health and safety.
    • Participating in curriculum and organizational meetings.
  6. Public Examinations

    Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, recording, and supervising during examinations.

  7. Management Activities/Administration
    • Contributing to staff recruitment, managing colleagues, and developing curriculum and pastoral activities.
    • Participating in administrative tasks, supervising support staff, and managing resources.
  8. Working Hours
    • Available for 195 days per year, with specific hours and breaks as outlined, including supervision and administrative duties.
  9. Staff Cover

    Supervising pupils in the absence of their teacher, with certain conditions based on school size and duration of absence.
