Job summary

Angel Hill Surgery in Bury St Edmunds is seeking a qualified dispenser to join a busy GP practice multidisciplinary team. The role is part-time (14 hours per week) with shifts on Tuesdays and Fridays, 12:00–19:00. The hourly rate rises to £15.71 after a successful probation period.

You will process prescriptions, manage stock, handle charges and FP10 declarations, and support the dispensary and practice teams with daily operations.

Qualifications

• NVQ Level 2 Dispensary or equivalent Pharmacy Services qualification.
• At least 2 years of dispensary and pharmacy experience.
• Excellent clinical and medication knowledge.
• Understanding and experience of working as a dispenser in GP practice setting.
• Commitment to continue to learn new clinical skills and develop your career.
• Excellent patient facing inter-personal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Process all prescriptions and repeat prescriptions as authorised by GPs and prescribing nurses where appropriate, in accordance with the Dispensing Services Quality Scheme.
• Ensure medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and, if in doubt on item, dose or labelling, check with the authorising doctor or duty doctor.
• Collect all due prescription charges and ensure patient FP10 declaration is completed and signed.
• Process hospital letters.
• Process dossette boxes.
• Manage ordering stock and stock control.
• Answer and deal with dispensary phone enquiries.
• Monitor patients’ exemption status.
• Sort and dispose of unwanted/returned medication.
• Any other duties to assist in the smooth day-to-day running of the dispensary and surgery as directed by the dispensary manager or practice manager.

About the Role

Angel Hill Surgery is looking to welcome a qualified dispenser into our busy practice, who will play a full and active role as part of the practice multi-disciplinary team. This role is offered on a part time basis, 14 hours per week, working 12 - 1900 on Tuesdays and Fridays. Please note the hourly rate will increase to £15.71 after completion of satisfactory probationary period.

Main responsibilities of the role:

• Process all relevant prescriptions and repeat prescriptions as authorised by GPs and prescribing nurses where appropriate, in accordance with the good practice principles of the Dispensing Services Quality Scheme;
• Ensure that all medicines and appliances dispensed are checked against the prescription and whenever there is doubt about the appropriateness of the item, or about the dose or labelling instructions, to check with the authorising doctor or duty doctor;
• Collect all due prescription charges and ensure that the patient declaration on the reverse of the FP10 is duly filled in and signed by the patient;
• Process hospital letters;
• Process dossette boxes;
• Manage ordering stock and stock control;
• Answer and deal with dispensary phone enquiries;
• Monitor patients’ exemption status;
• Sort and dispose of unwanted/returned medication;
• Any other duties to assist in the smooth day to day running of the dispensary and surgery as directed by the either the dispensary manager or practice manager.

About the Candidate

You will have the following skills and experience:

• You will have at least a NVQ Level 2 Dispensary or equivalent Pharmacy Services qualification;
• At least 2 years dispensary and pharmacy experience;
• Excellent clinical and medication knowledge;
• Understanding and experience of working as a dispenser in GP practice setting;
• The commitment to continue to learn new clinical skills and develop your career;
• The confidence to work as part of a busy GP multi-disciplinary practice team and using your own initiative in decision making;
• The ability to be adaptable and flexible in your approach;
• Excellent patient facing inter-personal communication skills.
