Job description

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.

Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.

Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances, and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

Digital Forensic Examiners will support frontline officers by completing mobile examinations at XRY kiosks and conducting enhanced examinations. Working in the Digital Forensics Team (DFT) offers the opportunity to become a highly skilled expert in digital technology that enhances frontline policing.

You will independently examine mobile devices following standard operating procedures, develop examination plans, and manage multiple requests within your caseload.

You will use technical knowledge and specialist software to provide solutions to customer requirements.

You will support training delivery on self-service kiosk technologies and ensure software updates, audits, and user profiles are maintained.

Skills & Experience

Experience:

  • Experience working within a Digital Forensics environment is essential.

Qualifications:

  • A good standard of education demonstrating numeracy, literacy, and IT skills or previous experience in digital forensics or law enforcement is essential.
  • Degree level education in digital forensics is desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective engagement with customers using negotiating and influencing techniques.
  • Understanding of digital forensics, ISO 17025, and the Forensic Science Regulator’s Codes of Practice and Conduct.
  • Experience working independently in investigative or analytical environments.
  • Problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to learn specific digital forensic software applications and a commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Self-motivated with experience working to deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
  • Ability to manage high workloads with conflicting priorities.
  • Problem-solving skills demonstrated through inquiry and questioning.
  • Understanding of customer needs and the ability to challenge appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain absolute discretion with sensitive and confidential casework.
