Job Title: Aquatic Ecologist

Depot/Department: Water & Ecology

Job Purpose: The role involves providing aquatic ecological support for projects and ecological services to the Group. Responsibilities include offering consultancy expertise across freshwater ecology disciplines, conducting sampling, and interpreting macroinvertebrates in freshwater habitats. We are primarily seeking a consultant but are open to considering other grades.

Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with a 1-hour unpaid lunch. Overtime and occasional overnight stays are required due to the nature of the role.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct ecological site assessments of aquatic fauna and flora, including report writing.
  2. Process and analyze aquatic macroinvertebrate samples using methods like RICT 2, BMWP, ASPT, WHPT.
  3. Respond to environmental incidents, perform necessary fieldwork, and complete impact assessments with reports.
  4. Advise the Group and clients on ecological impacts of works.
  5. Author reports, develop monitoring strategies, and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
  6. Lead small survey teams (macroinvertebrate, RCA, electrofishing) and support larger surveys.
  7. Assist in business development and marketing efforts.
  8. Support project delivery within the Water & Ecology team.
  9. Prepare quotes for small projects.
  10. Manage own workload to ensure successful project delivery.
  11. Manage medium-sized or multiple small projects effectively.

Health and Safety: Follow all health and safety instructions, act as an example, address breaches immediately, and uphold health and safety principles at all times.

Measures of Success: Performance will be reviewed annually, with guidance provided. The post holder should seek support when needed.

Knowledge & Experience:

  • 2-3 years in ecological consultancy, focusing on aquatic environments.
  • Experience with survey techniques for fish and macroinvertebrates.
  • Knowledge of legislation such as the Water Framework Directive.
  • Good time management, communication skills, and team collaboration.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
  • Degree in an environmental subject with relevant aquatic ecology experience.
  • Higher degree in Aquatic Ecology or related field is advantageous.
  • Membership in a professional environmental body.
  • Experience in commercial/regulatory work is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel; experience with specialist software is a plus.
  • Full UK driving license.
