Job Description

Design Safety Engineer

Full Time

Bristol - Hybrid - minimum 3 days on site per week

Why Rolls-Royce?

We have a number of Design Safety career opportunities within our Defence business in Bristol and our satellite site in Derby. We are looking to fill a number of roles with varying levels of experience, from new graduates eager to develop to experienced specialists.

We are a market leader in aero engines for military transport and patrol aircraft, with significant presence in naval, combat, and helicopter applications. We are pioneering advanced and innovative power systems to ensure future combat air systems remain at the forefront of mission capability throughout their operational service.

Work with us and you'll be welcomed into an inclusive culture that invests in your continuous learning and development, providing access to a broad range of experiences.

We offer excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and remarkable benefits, including bonuses, employee support assistance, and discounts.

Our hybrid working model allows flexibility to balance time between office, home, or remote locations, with an expectation of attending the workplace approximately three days per week for collaboration and specific activities.

What you will be doing:

Design Safety engineers influence design by understanding how failures impact system operation, analyzing the resulting design, and providing feedback on safety or reliability impacts to ensure standards are met. Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating design concepts for potential failures, failure consequences, and hazards, and defining mitigation strategies.
  • Assessing component designs to identify failure modes, effects, and criticality (e.g., FMECA).
  • Identifying critical parts and systems through detailed risk analysis.
  • Analyzing failures using deterministic and probabilistic methods.
  • Quantifying risks related to human/system interaction, including Human Factors.
  • Producing Safety Case reports.
  • Operating a Failure Reporting, Analysis & Corrective Action System (FRACAS).

Who we're looking for:

At Rolls-Royce, we value agility, boldness, collaboration, and simplicity. These principles underpin our culture and are essential qualities for our roles. Additionally, the role-specific skills include:

  • Degree qualification in a STEM subject with relevant engineering experience (Mechanical, Aeronautical, Electrical, or Controls).
  • A holistic approach to problem solving.
  • Analytical and logical thinking.
  • Familiarity with gas turbine engine design, operation, and environment.
  • Knowledge of Safety & Reliability engineering techniques.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion, believing that different backgrounds and perspectives enhance our success. We support a respectful culture where everyone can reach their full potential.

To work for Rolls-Royce Defence, you must hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without caveats. Rolls-Royce will support your application for clearance if needed.

Due to the nature of our work and asset protection, you must hold a UK passport. Dual nationals will require additional background checks before starting work.
