Job Role:
Taylor Woodrow is recruiting for a Design Manager to lead on the management of design activities across multiple infrastructure upgrade schemes within our northern regional contracting division. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager, the Design Manager will be responsible for the delivery of contractor designs across the region.
The projects are typically city centre regeneration schemes or junction improvements with values of £2m-£10m across our Northern region. Current schemes include Urban realm improvements across Newcastle, Wolverhampton and Birmingham. The team are also working on Manchester Airport Surface level car park and highways improvements
Duties:
- Manage permanent works design to achieve delivery of cost-effective and compliant Contractor’s design within agreed timescales and fee budgets.
- Implement design management procedures so as to comply with ISO 9001 design requirements and Client requirements for management of contractor’s design specified in the Contract.
- Draft project-specific Design Management Plan and revise same periodically
- Control and track design changes using the Design Manager’s Toolkit.
- Facilitate technical co-ordination between disciplines on site
- Facilitate review of design deliverables to ensure required Quality is achieved, particularly with respect to: Compliance with Client’s requirements as defined in the main contract;
- Application of relevant British Standards and sector or Client-specific standards;
- Production team requirements for buildability (cost, programme, safety, repeatability, design for offsite manufacture).
- Ensure compliance with CDM regulations as they apply to design.
- Oversee fulfilment of Principal Designer, Common Safety Method, and Engineering Safety Management functions if required
- Challenge Work-in-Progress design and facilitate development of design that eliminates or mitigates construction health and safety risk
- Ensure lead designer maintains Design Decision Register.
- Monitor cost and schedule performance of sub-contracted designers using EPPR proforma from Design Manager’s Toolkit (or project-specific EVM based pro-forma).
- Review subcontracted designers’ applications for payment and authorise as appropriate.
Person Specification
- Formal qualification in a civil engineering or construction related subject
- Previous experience as a manager delivering Civil Engineering activities, either in a design or a contracting environment
- CSCS card
- Chartered status is advantageous but not essential
