Job summary

Wallace Hind Selection LTD is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineering Design Manager (or a very experienced Mechanical Design Engineer moving into management) for a well established British manufacturer of packaging machinery.

Based in Bedford, the role leads a 5-person drawing office, splitting time 50/50 between management and hands‑on design, delivering on time and KPI targets for new machines, upgrades and spares, and producing drawings, BOMs and spare part lists.

Qualifications

• Experience as Mechanical Engineering Design Manager or Drawing Office Manager.
• Experience with special purpose machinery, ideally packaging machinery.
• HNC in Mechanical Engineering minimum.

Responsibilities

• Manage and lead the Mechanical Design Engineering team (Drawing Office) of 5 engineers.
• Spends 50% of time in management and 50% as hands-on design engineer.
• Achieve delivery times and KPI's for new machines, upgrades and spares; create drawings, BOMs and spare parts lists.
• Collaborate with Electrical, Software & Controls and manufacturing teams.

BASIC SALARY: up to £65,000

JOB DESCRIPTION

Mechanical Engineering Design Manager, Mechanical Design Engineer, Drawing Office Manager - packaging machinery, turnkey capital equipment, industrial equipment

As our Design Manager, you will be managing the companies Mechanical Design Engineering function (Drawing Office) and a team of 5 Mechanical Design Engineers. You will spend 50% of your time managing and leading the team, and 50% as a hands on Design Engineer.

You will be expected to achieve agreed delivery times & KPI`s on new machines, upgrades & spare parts, to create drawings, BOM`s & spares lists and will be expected to liaise effectively with the Electrical Design, Software & Controls and manufacturing teams.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

• You WILL be an experienced Mechanical Engineering Design Manager (or Drawing Office Manager) or will be a very experienced Design Engineer looking to move into a management role.
• You WILL have specific experience of special purpose machinery and ideally of packaging machinery.
• You WILL be a qualified Mechanical Engineer to a minimum of HNC level.
• You WILL have experience of using SolidWorks &/or AutoCAD software.
