Job overview

To work as part of the nursery team as the person in charge in the absence of the manager. To provide high quality, stimulating childcare and early education for children of NHS staff, enabling parents to return to work and thereby supporting the Trust’s Improving Working Lives initiative.

Main duties of the job

Skills
• To have enough confidence and initiative to take charge of the nursery when the manager is not present and to oversee the running of the allotted age range
• To have the ability to problem solve and to know when matters need to be passed onto the Nursery Manager
• To have excellent communication and interpersonal skills essential for passing on information to others when they are in charge and for team work within the nursery
• To establish and maintain supportive relationships within the staffing team, especially the staff within the units they manage, also with parents and children.
• To have effective writing skills, enabling completion of childrens’ written assessments and other paperwork. Being able to check other staff member’s assessments before being presented to parents. Also, being able to complete some office related paperwork when in charge.
• To have the imaginative skills to lead a planning meeting and contribute ideas for childrens’ activities, topics and themes and to make sure that these plans are implemented.
• To have the ability to engage childrens’ interests and to ensure that all staff are doing this, whilst encouraging childrens’ learning through play.

Training
• NNEB/NVQ in childcare and early education at level 3 or equivalent
• A minimum of 3 years post qualifying experience and for at least 1 year of that experience to have been in a day nursery setting.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To work as a senior member of the staffing team, based in a unit, ensuring this is run smoothly, reporting regularly to the manager.

• To take charge of the nursery as a whole, in a supernumerary capacity when the manager is not present and to display the same high level of competence.

• To take charge of any events in the managers’ absence, i.e. running of staff meetings, showing prospective parents around, carrying out new parent inductions etc.

• To assist the manager in recruitment and selection, induction, training and appraisals.

• To ensure the nursery and all staff are providing a safe, stimulating environment to encourage children to learn through play and reach their full potential.

• To ensure the Ofsted requirements are being met and all other nursery N.B.T. policies are adhered to.

• To work closely with parents, especially those of their key children and others within the rooms they are in charge of, ensuring good relationships are maintained and all relevant information is shared between both parties.

• To lead the room they are based in, but to be fully flexible if the situation calls for them to work with any age group within the nursery.

• To be able to give guidance, support and advice to all staff and students – ensuring everyone is working professionally and that their working practices are to a high standard, as required by Ofsted.

• To promote equal opportunities within the nursery and to encourage all staff to do the same in order to ensure that a culturally sensitive environment is maintained.

• To have regular meetings with the manager to report any information on the running of the nursery, covering any issues that may be relevant.

• To work and contribute towards a Quality Assurance programme – Bristol Standards

• To plan and evaluate day-to-day activities to ensure that children have a stimulating and fun day related to their age.

• To co-ordinate both individual and group activities for the children and ensure that they are adequately supervised on and off site.
