About the role

The deputy chief sub editor is a crucial position within our editorial team. Every word that the public sees under the Monocle banner goes through the subbing desk, from the stories in the magazine to the descriptions of our radio programmes. The successful candidate will be responsible for helping to ensure that they are all accurate and adhere to Monocle’s tone of voice.

Alongside the production of 10 issues of Monocle magazine a year, special issues, newspapers and promotional material, you will also be involved in commercial products.

We have a team of passionate sub editors based in London and Tokyo, and also work with remote freelancers.

The successful candidate can demonstrate:

- Several years’ sub editing experience for a national newspaper or magazine across print and digital

- A good knowledge of InDesign

- A methodical and organised approach, and an ability to work quickly and accurately when faced with multiple deadlines

- Skill in writing snappy headlines and engaging standfirsts

- A deep understanding of grammar

- An ability to rapidly adopt our house style and tone -

- Clarity and effective communication skills when dealing with section editors, writers and other production departments

- A willingness to be flexible with their hours – there are some late nights and production weeks can include Saturdays

- A willingness to work in our London office five days a week
