Job summary

A&O Shearman is seeking a skilled SQL Database Engineer to manage MS SQL and Azure SQL platforms across on-premises, AVS, and cloud environments. You will implement backup/restore procedures, monitor performance, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure high availability and robust database operations.

The role requires PowerShell scripting, Linux familiarity, and experience with DevOps tools like GitHub.

Responsibilities

• Support databases for applications across the firm, including finance, CRM, and time capture systems.
• Support other business-critical applications, file transfer, legal tech, and various services.
• Collaborate with third parties and other service teams to deliver a world-class DB service.
• Maintain MS SQL and Dynamics 365 platforms, on-premises, Azure, AVS, and cloud environments.
• Develop backup/restore procedures and automation to turn repeatable tasks into repeatable processes.
• Monitor database metrics, ensure availability, scalability, and performance of all DB systems.
• Lead database-related projects and ensure timely delivery.
• Participate in on-call and out-of-hours support for databases and apps.

Salary: £45,000 - 73,000 per year

Requirements

• We want you to be proficient in Microsoft SQL Server, Azure SQL Server, and SQL infrastructure.
• We prefer AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals and DP-900 Azure Data Fundamentals certifications.
• We want you to have experience with SQL Availability Groups, clustering, and high-availability features.
• We want you to have SQL and PowerShell scripting experience.
• We want you to have SQL and server performance tuning experience.
• We want you to have SQL replication performance and monitoring tuning experience.
• We want you to understand Linux server management.
• We want you to have experience with programming languages including PowerShell, SQL, and preferably Linux.
• We want you to be able to work independently and communicate well.
• We want you to be able to multi-task and share knowledge with the wider team.
• We want you to have knowledge of DevOps, GitHub, and other collaboration toolsets.

Responsibilities

• We support key databases for applications used across our firm, including finance, customer relationship management, business intake, and time capture systems.
• We support other business-critical applications, including file transfer, legal technology, and various application services.
• We work with third parties that provide expertise in these systems.
• We support our database infrastructure, including MS-SQL, and the Dynamics365 platform and applications built on it.
• We support application servers and databases across on-premises and SaaS/cloud-hosted environments.
• We package, configure, test, and deploy applications.
• We work with other service support teams in Infrastructure & Operations, including End-User Compute, Infrastructure, and Networks, to provide a world-class service.
• We work with our global service desk, regional support teams, and the global IT department.
• We provide technical database expertise on projects when required.
• We ensure availability, scalability, and performance of all application database systems through data metrics.
• We capture and analyse database metrics and identify improvements.
• We design and implement robust monitoring alerts to identify potential issues early.
• We maintain core database infrastructure servers in Azure, AVS, and on-premises environments.
• We develop backup and restore procedures for major databases to ensure data integrity.
• We develop and leverage automation procedures to turn repeatable actions into automated processes.
• We analyse database capacity metrics across server infrastructure.
• We provide database engineering expertise to optimise database migrations, queries, and performance.
• We manage and monitor SQL availability groups and clustered SQL servers.
• We lead database-related projects and ensure timely delivery.
• We analyse data to identify and prioritise operations and determine root causes of major issues.
• We participate in on-call and out-of-hours support for applications and databases.
• We support maintenance reviews and vulnerability assessments of MS SQL.
• We collaborate with other engineering teams on production changes, incidents, and problem management.
• We document our work and share learnings with the wider team, including team upskilling.
