Job summary

ByteHire is seeking an experienced Database Administrator for a remote-first role with occasional Edinburgh office presence (1 day per month). You will oversee production MySQL/MariaDB environments, ensure security, high availability, and disaster recovery, and drive performance improvements across a SaaS platform.

You'll collaborate with development and infrastructure teams in an Agile environment, plan upgrades, implement backups, and optimise queries.

Qualifications

  • Experience administering MySQL or MariaDB production environments.
  • Schema design and relational data modelling.
  • SQL optimisation, query analysis and indexing.
  • High availability, replication, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Performance monitoring and observability experience.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and maintain production database platforms across multiple environments.
  • Ensure databases remain secure, resilient, and highly available.
  • Plan and execute upgrades, maintenance activities, and backup strategies.
  • Monitor system health and resolve performance issues before users are affected.
  • Optimise SQL queries and indexing strategies to improve responsiveness.
  • Work with developers to review database changes throughout the software lifecycle.
  • Support capacity planning and propose improvements to database architecture.
  • Produce technical documentation and contribute to operational standards.
  • Participate in incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • Work in Agile software delivery teams.

About The Role:

  • Exposure to NoSQL, graph, or time-series databases.
  • Experience supporting SaaS or cloud-native platforms.
  • Exposure to backend development technologies such as PHP
