Job description

Ormandy Rycroft Engineering is a well-established UK manufacturer of bespoke vessels, heat exchangers and packaged mechanical plant, with significant engineering, design and manufacturing capability.

Our Data Centre division is already a successful and important part of the business, with a strong project pipeline and significant opportunity for further growth across the UK, Ireland and Europe.

We are looking for a commercially ambitious technical sales leader to take ownership of the next stage of that growth: expanding our influence with clients, consultants and contractors, developing major accounts and converting early project engagement into profitable orders.

The successful candidate will identify and develop relationships with the senior decision-makers and influencers shaping major data centre projects. You will work to engage earlier in the project lifecycle, strengthen our position within key accounts and move Ormandy further upstream into design, specification and commercial discussions.

This is an opportunity to play a defining role in a strategically important and rapidly growing part of an established engineering business.

Person specification:

  • Strong consultative and strategic selling skills.
  • Proven ability to develop new business and create opportunities rather than simply manage existing enquiries.
Confidence approaching senior decision-makers and developing relationships from a cold start.
  • Strong account planning and stakeholder-mapping capability.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, negotiation and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong commercial judgement and the ability to create and defend value.
  • Persistent and resilient, with the ability to maintain momentum when projects change, stall or encounter setbacks.
  • Able to challenge customers constructively and professionally where appropriate.
  • Technically credible and comfortable discussing complex mechanical systems with consultants, contractors and engineers.
  • Able to interpret mechanical schematics and understand how individual products integrate into wider mechanical systems.
  • Intellectually curious, commercially ambitious and willing to continually develop technical and market knowledge.
  • Able to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering, manufacturing and commercial colleagues.
  • Organised and capable of managing multiple complex opportunities and long sales cycles.
  • Comfortable travelling regularly to customers and project stakeholders across the UK and, increasingly, Ireland and Europe.

Responsible for:

  • Taking commercial ownership of the Data Centre market and driving its continued development across the UK, Ireland and Europe.
  • Identifying and targeting strategically important clients, operators, M&E consultants, principal contractors, mechanical contractors, procurement teams and industry influencers.
  • Developing major accounts and building strong relationships across multiple levels within customer organisations.
  • Opening doors into organisations where Ormandy is not currently well represented and deepening existing customer relationships.
  • Engaging with projects earlier in the design and specification process to increase Ormandy’s technical and commercial influence.
  • Understanding project stakeholders, buying dynamics and decision-making processes from concept and design through specification, tender and procurement.
  • Creating and maintaining strategic account plans for priority organisations and ensuring sales activity is focused on opportunities capable of delivering meaningful growth.
  • Developing and communicating a compelling value proposition around engineering quality, technical capability, reliability, manufacturing capacity and programme certainty.
  • Working consultatively with customers to identify project risks, improve technical outcomes and develop practical, right‑sized engineering solutions.
  • Developing and maintaining a strong sales pipeline and converting relationships, technical influence and sustained account development into profitable orders.
  • Maintaining commercial momentum throughout long and complex sales cycles, from initial engagement through negotiation, order conversion and long‑term account growth.
  • Providing accurate sales reporting, forecasting and visibility of strategically important opportunities.
  • Working closely with internal engineering, design, estimating, manufacturing and commercial teams to develop and secure opportunities.
  • Representing Ormandy professionally within the market and building long‑term relationships based on technical integrity, trust and customer value.

Previous experience within the Data Centre sector would be highly advantageous, particularly where this includes relationships with major clients, operators, consultants or contractors.

However, direct Data Centre experience is not essential.

Candidates from adjacent technically led markets will also be considered, particularly those with experience of:

Experience of consultant‑led specifications, contractor procurement and long project sales cycles would be particularly valuable.

An understanding of Data Centre cooling, resilience, redundancy, uptime, thermal storage, increasing power density and liquid cooling would also be advantageous.

Qualifications

A Mechanical Engineering degree would be advantageous but is not essential.

Applications are equally welcomed from time‑served engineers who have moved into technical sales, or candidates who have developed significant technical expertise through experience within a specialist engineering market.

Previous experience in technical sales, business development, account management or commercial leadership within a relevant engineering sector is expected.

Salary And Benefits

Competitive basic salary with performance‑related OTE.

Pension, car allowance/company car and healthcare package to be confirmed.

The role offers significant scope for development. Depending on the individual and the growth of the business, this could include building and leading a larger sales team, taking on broader commercial responsibility or progressing into a Director‑level position

Location

UK based. The role will require regular travel to London and customers across the UK, with the territory expected to develop across Ireland and Europe. Regular attendance at our Bradford office will also be required as appropriate.
