Job summary

Derby City Council is seeking a Cycle Derby Lead Coach to coordinate Bikeability delivery and inclusion initiatives across Derby. You will lead a team of Cycle Trainers, deliver inclusive cycling sessions, and manage school deliveries with a focus on safety and high quality outcomes.

You will mentor instructors, coordinate resources, and drive opportunities that reduce barriers to participation while ensuring programme delivery is well-documented and compliant.

The Opportunity

Could you combine excellent organisation and coordination skills with a passion for helping people experience the joy, freedom and benefits of cycling? This is an exciting opportunity to join the Cycle Derby team as our Lead Coach – Inclusion & Bikeability and play a key role in making cycling accessible to more people across Derby.

This is a varied role combining operational planning, hands‑on delivery and team leadership. You’ll coordinate Bikeability delivery across schools, support and develop our team of Cycle Trainers, and deliver inclusive cycling sessions yourself, while helping us develop opportunities that remove barriers to cycling. You’ll coordinate people, resources and delivery to help ensure our programmes run safely, consistently and effectively, working closely with the Active Travel Coordinator and supporting Cycle Trainers to deliver high‑quality sessions.

As Lead Coach – Inclusion and Bikeability, you'll help make that vision a reality, working alongside passionate colleagues who believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to ride.

What you’ll be doing

• Coordinating Bikeability delivery across schools, planning Cycle Trainer schedules, managing changes and making sure the right people, equipment and information are in place for successful delivery.
• Support schools and Cycle Trainers with the digital systems used to plan and manage Bikeability, helping to resolve issues and keep deliveries running smoothly.
• Lead the organisation and delivery of inclusive cycling sessions, adapting activities and approaches to meet the needs of people with disabilities, additional needs or other barriers to participation.
• Deliver cycle training and other cycling activities yourself when required, including stepping in to cover school deliveries and maintain continuity of the programme.
• Provide day‑to‑day support, mentoring and supervision to our Cycle Trainers, helping them develop their practice and maintain safe, high‑quality and inclusive delivery.
• Help develop new cycling opportunities and partnerships that increase participation and support people who are currently under‑represented in cycling.
• Manage and monitor information relating to Bikeability and inclusive cycling, including participation, equipment and delivery records, to support effective programme management and reporting.

About you

• Experience of delivering cycle training, coaching or other cycling activities.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to coordinate people, activities and schedules across different locations.
• Experience of supporting, mentoring or supervising instructors, coaches, volunteers or colleagues.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build positive working relationships with schools, colleagues, participants and partner organisations.
• Experience of adapting coaching or teaching approaches to meet different participant needs and create an inclusive experience.
• Good IT and digital skills, with the ability to learn and confidently use systems to manage information, bookings and programme delivery.
• A proactive and solution‑focused approach, with the ability to manage changing priorities and resolve operational issues.
• A genuine commitment to inclusive cycling and reducing barriers to participation.
• Knowledge of safeguarding responsibilities when working with children, alongside a commitment to delivering safe, inclusive and high‑quality cycling activities.

A recognised cycle instructor qualification is desirable, but if you have the right experience and are willing to undertake the required National Standard Cycle Instructor qualification, we will support you to develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the role.
