Qualifications

  • Time-served mechanical or electrical engineer, preferably HNC level or equivalent.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH certificate.
  • Proven experience in a maintenance engineering role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Previous permit writing experience.
  • Solid understanding of RAMS and risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of permit categories including Working at Height, Confined Space, Hot Work, Electrical, Excavations, Lifting.
  • Strong knowledge of LOTO and process isolations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and CMMS such as SAP.

Responsibilities

  • Own and continuously improve the Control of Contractors planning process.
  • Facilitate the weekly Control of Contractors meeting.
  • Provide permit cover across shifts as required.
  • Act as First Approver for Site Engineering RAMS within the manufacturing software system (Helix).
  • Act as Second Approver for other site works RAMS.
  • Issue permits to safely control contractor and in-house activities, monitor compliance during works, ensure completion sign-off, and close permits in Enablon.
  • Conduct periodic contractor audits.
  • Deliver H&S briefings, safety alerts, and toolbox talks.
  • Support the development of standardised engineering strategies for contractor control.
  • Maintain compliance with IA audit processes.
  • Contribute to dynamic risk assessments for non-routine activities.
  • Prepare reports and maintain visual management updates for the Maintenance Manager.
  • Stay informed of regulatory developments and best practice in compliance control.

About the Role

We are seeking a Control of Works Engineer (Compliance) to play a meaningful role in ensuring site compliance with current legislation and Diageo Global Technical standards. This is a high-impact position responsible for leading and continuously improving the Control of Contractors process, ensuring all contractor and in-house activities are carried out safely, compliantly, and in line with statutory requirements. You will be instrumental in embedding a strong safety culture across site while maintaining robust governance over permit issuing, Risk Assessments and method statements (RAMS), and contractor controls.

Qualifications
  • Are a time-served Mechanical or Electrical Engineer, preferably qualified to HNC level or equivalent.
  • Hold IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH certification.
  • Proven experience in a maintenance engineering role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Have previous permit writing experience.
  • Have a solid understanding of Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
  • Have practical experience managing permit categories including: Working at Height Confined Space Entry Hot Work Electrical (LV/HV) Excavations Lifting Operations.
  • Have strong knowledge of LOTO and process isolations.
  • Are computer literate (e.g., Microsoft Office and CMMS such as SAP).
Desirable Experience
  • Working knowledge of Enablon permit systems.
  • Understanding of Mechanical or Electrical legislation and standards (e.g., CompEx).
  • Knowledge of Machinery and Functional Safety systems.
  • Familiarity with CDM, COMAH, and DSEAR regulations.
  • Understanding of Environmental and Quality systems.
