Job summary

Priory Hospital Southampton is inviting a Consultant Psychiatrist to lead inpatient care and deliver high-quality, patient-centred treatment for adults in a NHS-linked, private inpatient setting. You will guide MDTs, conduct comprehensive assessments and lead ward rounds in a 31-bed unit and related services.

Experience in UK acute inpatient psychiatry and NHS/independent sector work is preferred; relocation to the region may be considered. Competitive salary and benefits on offer.

Responsibilities

• Provide consultant psychiatric care for up to 18 inpatients, undertaking comprehensive assessments and ward rounds.

• Contribute to governance, audits and service improvement with NHS partners.
• Support patient flow through regular reviews, risk management and discharge planning.

Salary £170,000 / year – Full Time (37.5 hours per week). Permanent position, part‑time and job‑share arrangements also considered.

Description

Set within beautiful, landscaped gardens, Priory Hospital Southampton offers therapeutic and recovery‑focused residential treatment for patients with various mental health conditions. The acute inpatient service comprises 31 mixed‑gender adult beds across two wards, a 13‑bed Eating Disorders ward and an Eating Disorders day hospital, all catering to NHS patients. The hospital holds a CQC rating of “Good” and one of its acute wards is accredited by the Royal College of Psychiatrist Quality Network. Partnerships with local NHS Trusts and commissioners are well‑established.

What you’ll be doing

• Provide consultant psychiatric care for up to 18 inpatients, undertaking comprehensive assessments, leading ward rounds and delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred treatment.
• Provide clinical leadership for the ward, leading multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings, supporting effective decision‑making and ensuring safe, recovery‑focused care.
• Supervise and support the Specialty Doctor, while working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to promote clinical excellence and professional development.
• Contribute to service development through participation in clinical governance, audits, senior management meetings and service improvement initiatives, building strong relationships with NHS partners and commissioners.
• Support effective patient flow through regular clinical reviews, risk management and discharge planning.

We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist with experience in UK acute inpatient psychiatry, gained within the NHS and/or independent healthcare sector. The successful candidate will have a strong background in managing patients in an acute mental health inpatient setting and be confident working as part of a multidisciplinary team. Experienced Consultants with NHS acute ward experience are encouraged to apply, as are newly appointed Consultants with substantial inpatient expertise. Expected to commit to delivering high‑quality patient care, building strong relationships with NHS stakeholders and commissioners, and potentially relocating to the region if not based locally.
