Consultant
Job overview

The post is 8PAs. The first year includes 2 PAs seconded for research linked to the Children Hospital. This may be extended but if not the post would revert to 8 sessions in Liaison Psychiatry

5 years ago the PPMS was delivered entirely by Psychology. Psychiatry posts were created in response to a recognition of significant gaps in access to psychiatric input for those children and young people with co-morbid mental health problems or complex presentations. Since then the PPMS has moved towards becoming a multi-disciplinary service, reflecting the needs of all children and young people at CUH, and has added nursing and family therapy to the team. The expectation is that the professional leads work together to achieve the right balance of MDT input to match the psychological and mental health needs of children and young people at CUH. A particularly exciting part of this role is the unique opportunity to contribute to the development of Cambridge Children’s Hospital, a triumvirate partnership (CPFT, CUH, University of Cambridge) project to develop a dedicated children’s hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The current Tier 4 wards (based in Fulbourn) will be integrated within the new hospital. Cambridge Children’s Hospital will provide integrated physical and mental health care to an extent not previously achieved in the UK.

Depending on the interests of the post-holder, the 2 research sessions could be in a range of areas linked to the Children’s

Main duties of the job

• To work as an MDT member of the Paediatric Psychological Medicine Service (PPMS) based at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH)
• To provide medical leadership within the PPMS and work in unison with the other professional leads (Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing), to ensure the smooth functioning of the MDT to deliver high quality psychological and psychiatric care to children and young people.
• To support a joined-up MDT approach to the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of children and adolescents with psychological difficulties and psychiatric co-morbidities across the paediatric wards and out-patient clinics
• To support psychological services colleagues in maintaining a focus on both preventative and high quality psychological interventions for children, young people and their families.
• To provide advice and support to the broader PPMS in relation to medical/psychiatric issues – eg. complex cases, risk assessment, psychopharmacological issues.
