Consultant Ophthalmologist - Paediatric Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Department (part of the Head and Neck Care Group) at NHS HHP are primarily

located at all the main hospital sites in the group (Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital, Diana Princess

of Wales Hospital at Grimsby, Scunthorpe General Hospital, and Goole & District Hospital) where the

consultants are also based.

There will be an increase in imaging capacity when the Ophthalmic Imaging Hubs open at East Riding

Community Hospital, and Scunthorpe later this year.

Currently there are 32 consultant ophthalmologists (FT & LTFT) at NHS HHP. Plans are in motion for

additional recruitment to expand the team in the next 1-2 years.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will assume a direct clinical role within the department, sharing all facilities equally with the existing consultants. This is a substantive post (10 PAs) and the appointee will be joining

32 Consultant Ophthalmologist posts already established. The successful candidate will work 10 PA's a week, which will include an 8 DCC and 2 SPA split (Flexible working may be considered). It is expected that the successful applicant will play an active role in the consultant on call rota.

Professional Registration
  • oFull GMC registration
  • oEntry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following: oCertificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) oCertificate of Eligibility for specialist Registration (CESR)
Qualifications and Training
  • oFRCOphth or equivalent
  • oPostgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training
Clinical Experience
  • oCompetent Paediatric Ophthalmic surgeon and cataract surgeon
  • oFellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology
Management and Administration Experience
  • oAbility to manage and lead medical/surgical teams
  • oAbility to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
  • oAbility to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
  • oAbility to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery
Teaching, Audit and Research
  • oExperience of supervising junior medical staff
  • oCommitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
  • oEvidence of participation in audit
  • oAbility to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients
  • oEvidence of having conducted a practice changing audit
  • oExperience of teaching/ training in clinical courses e.g. IMPACT Course, Faculty, ALS Instructor, ALERT Instructor
  • oOriginal peer-reviewed research publications
