Job summary

Moulton College is seeking a Construction Technician to support the Construction department. The role involves preparing materials, maintaining workshops, and assisting teaching staff with practical lessons, while upholding health and safety standards.

The post requires safeguarding awareness, DBS clearance, and a commitment to delivering high-quality practical education. The role carries a 37-hour week with possible weekend/evening work and a salary of £24,487 per annum.

Qualifications

  • GCSE Maths and English at grade C or equivalent.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Experience with workshop equipment and materials.
  • Practical carpentry experience.
  • Experience in education or similar environment.
  • Knowledge of building construction and design.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials for practical classes.
  • Assist with preparation and collection of practical materials.
  • Clear up and clean workshops after classes.
  • Carry out day-to-day housekeeping in workshops and prep areas.
  • Complete administrative tasks including stock/asset registers.
  • Undertake basic maintenance and minor repairs in workshops.
  • Promote safeguarding and adherence to policies.
  • Support supervision of workshops and practical sessions.

Job Title: Construction Technician

Department: Construction

Hours: 37 hours per week. Weekend and evening working may be required when business needs demand.

Responsible to: Deputy Head of Faculty - Building Service, Professional & Technical

Salary / Scale: Professional Staff Spine - Band 6 Point 23 - £24,487.00 per annum

Aims and Purpose of the Post
  • To maintain and prepare day to day support of the construction area and associated facilities including ordering of materials and other resources and ensuring health and safety compliance.
  • To assist in the preparation of construction workshops for practical teaching lessons, including ordering of stock and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • To support students undertaking practical activity under the direction of a member of teaching staff.
  • To ensure the Construction Workshops are kept clean in line with College standards.
Specific Responsibilities
  • To prepare materials for practical classes.
  • To assist with the preparation and collection of practical materials.
  • To clear up and clean workshops following practical classes.
  • To carry out day to day housekeeping in the workshops and preparation areas.
  • To ensure that administrative procedures are completed efficiently, including statutory and internal returns, stock and asset registers.
  • To undertake basic maintenance and minor repairs within the workshops.
  • Promote the welfare of young people and vulnerable groups in all aspects of College life and to ensure safeguarding arrangements are adhered to at all times.
  • To ensure as far as possible the security of workshop equipment and materials.
  • To assist in the maintenance and sustainable development of resources and commercial activities.
  • To assist with the supervision and monitoring of workshops, practical classes or duties whilst under the direction of a lecturer or instructor or duties.
  • To collect materials for practical classes as required.
  • To promote and adhere to the College’s Safeguarding Policies and Procedures.
  • To promote and adhere to the College’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.
  • To manage student conduct in accordance with College policies.
  • Promote the welfare of young people and vulnerable groups in all aspects of College life and to ensure safeguarding arrangements are adhered to at all times.

This job specification represents the major tasks to be carried out by the post holder and identifies the level of responsibility at which the post holder will be required to work. Person Specification – Construction Technician
Qualifications
  • Minimum of grade C in GCSE Maths and English Language (or equivalent)
  • Commitment to and evidence of CPD
  • First Aid Certificate
Experience & Knowledge
  • Experience of working within the construction crafts or building services sector or both
  • Previous experience of workshop equipment
  • Practical Carpentry experience
  • Experience of working in Education or similar environment
  • Knowledge of technical information, building construction and design

  • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to communicate to all levels
