To become a Multi Skills Lecturer in our Construction department, we need someone who is qualified, patient and has a passion for teaching.

The successful candidate will have the chance to acquire new skills and develop their abilities in a wide range of activities.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

To find a more detailed list of your day-to-day responsibilities, please refer to the key roles and accountabilities section on our Job Description. You will support in many aspects, to name a few:

  • Design and deliver a broad construction curriculum (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, brickwork, plastering).
  • Provide engaging lessons that develop both practical skills and theoretical knowledge, tailored to different learning styles.
  • Assess student progress regularly, giving timely, constructive feedback and supporting learners to meet goals.
  • Maintain a safe, organised learning environment and ensure all health and safety standards are followed.
  • Supervise practical sessions, offering guidance and hands‑on support to students.
  • Plan and manage teaching effectively through lesson plans, schemes of work, and assessment materials.
  • Maintain accurate records (e.g. progress tracking, ILPs) and complete necessary administrative tasks.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, departments, and support staff to enhance learning and student experience.

  • Job Description AIM AND PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    The Multi-Trade lecturer in Construction is responsible for instructing and guiding students in various aspects of the construction industry, focusing on multiple trades within the field. This role involves designing and delivering comprehensive curriculum, providing hands‑on training and delivery of theory aspects of the qualification, fostering a positive learning environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction, proficiency in multiple trades, and a passion for educating and mentoring future professionals in the industry. In addition to teaching, to undertake a range of administrative and development duties that contributes to improving standards, achievements, and the learner experience.

    KEY ROLES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
    • Develop and implement a dynamic curriculum that covers a range of construction trades including carpentry, plumbing, brickwork, plaster and more.
    • Deliver engaging and interactive lessons that cater to diverse learning styles, ensuring students acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
    • Conduct regular assessments to evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
    • Create and maintain a safe and organized learning environment, ensuring compliance with all safety regulations and best practices in the construction industry.
    • Supervise and assist students during hands‑on practical sessions, offering guidance and corrective instruction as needed.
    • Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and best practices, and integrate relevant information into the curriculum.
    • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere, promoting teamwork, respect, and professionalism among students.
    • Collaborate with other department members and departments to enhance the overall educational experience for students.
    • Provide mentorship and career guidance to students interested in pursuing apprenticeships or entering the workforce upon completion of the program.
    • Participate in professional development activities and attend workshops to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
    • To deliver high quality teaching and learning by:

      - Providing students with a planned learning and assessment experience.

      - Effectively managing and monitoring the learning process.

      - Providing regular assessment opportunities.

      - Providing timely and constructive feedback.

      - Guiding and supporting learners to achieve their learning goals.

    • To support and where appropriate, contextualise and/or ‘signpost’ Functional Skills in the curriculum (inexperienced staff will be given training and support).
    • To actively develop new technology in teaching, learning and assessment.
    • To provide assignment and assessment material appropriate to each specific programme.
    • Where appropriate, to liaise with Study Centre staff to ensure that all necessary learning tools and information are available to support independent study sessions.
    • To produce schemes of work, lesson plans, individual learning plans and assessment schedules etc, appropriate to the curriculum area.
    • To evaluate and assess (formative and summative) the work of the learners in relation to the curriculum criteria and provide a timely constructive and helpful learner feedback.
    • To attend curriculum meetings, open events, parents evening, student interviews, student information evenings - days and contribute to the continual quality improvement mechanisms (e.g., contribute to the maintenance of course files, timely updating of e-ILPs on ProMonitor).
    • To keep accurate and effective systems of administration which support the student and College needs, including management and maintenance of learner ILPs, progress and performance records.
    • Where appropriate, liaise with other departments (e.g., Exams and MIS).
    • To ensure safe working practices across the programme area.

    GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

    • To commit to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults
    • To participate in the College’s Performance Management Scheme and attend such training events as are necessary to enable him/her to carry out the duties of the job description.
    • To continually improve teaching, learning and assessment through proactive CPD and sharing best practice.
    • To actively participate in the College’s Quality System, including quality improvement strategies and initiatives.
    • To undertake such other duties as may be assigned commensurate with the grade and purpose of the post.
    • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of him/her and for others affected by his/her work.
    • To actively support College Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity policies.
    • To operate/conduct all HR tasks and functions within the principles of GDPR.

    CONDITIONS OF SERVICE – Academic staff

    The appointment is subject to the Conditions of Service for Academic Staff. The work pattern of a Lecturer is not necessarily linked to the traditional academic year.

    All successful applicants will undergo the following checks:

    • Qualification validation check

    SALARY

    The salary for this post is up to £43,194. Starting salary will be dependent upon experience and qualifications. Once you have successfully passed your probationary period, your salary will increase within the salary band on an annual incremental basis, until you reach the top of the salary scale. Increments are in August.

    TEACHING QUALIFICATION

    Applicants are required to hold an appropriate teaching qualification or be willing to undertake and gain the Certificate in Education and Training within 2 years of their appointment. Successful applicants will be required to attend the course on‑site as the College delivers the course in-house.

    Please note – whilst obtaining a teaching qualification is a contractual requirement, the College reviews its CPD budget on an annual basis regarding availability of funds and cannot therefore guarantee that newly appointed staff will receive either part or full funding for the course fees. However, student loan facilities are available.

    MATHS AND ENGLISH

    All staff are required to have a minimum level 2 qualification in both English and Maths. If you are not already in receipt of one or both qualifications, you will be expected to obtain it (them) during your employment at the College.

    SAFEGUARDING

    The College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

    All newly appointed staff will be required to undertake safeguarding training following their appointment.

    Heart of Worcestershire College adheres to the Department of Education’s guidance on ‘Keeping children safe in Education’. As part of your induction, you will be required to read and understand part 1 of this document.

    VALIDATION OF QUALIFICATIONS

    The College will undertake qualification validation by writing to the appropriate educational institute. Only those qualifications which are essential for the post will be followed up.

    HOURS OF WORK

    The hours of work will be based on 37hours per week, of this up to 25 hour per week will be delivery. Actual hours of work to be agreed with the manager.

    ANNUAL LEAVE

    The post carries 37 annual leave days with an additional eight public bank holidays plus a further five concessionary days as ‘leave to be taken at the principal’s discretion’. Annual leave will be pro rata if part time.

    Please note that only in exceptional circumstances, with your director’s permission, will staff be able to take more than 3 consecutive weeks of leave in any leave year.

    PENSION SCHEME

    The College operates an occupational pension scheme, namely the ‘Teachers Pensions’.

    PROBATIONARY PERIOD

    All newly appointed staff must serve a 9‑month probationary period. During the probationary period you will have to complete the corporate staff induction, a Teaching and Learning Induction session if you deliver learning and additional mandatory courses on: Equality & Diversity session, Keeping Children safe in Education, Safeguarding Training session, Prevent, GDPR, Cyber Security and Health & Safety training session. Failure to complete this will prevent you from successfully completing your probation.

    REFERENCES

    All candidates must have 2 satisfactory references.

    LOCATION

    The successful applicant will be based at the Redditch Campus but may be required to work at other locations from time to time.

The costs of this check will be deducted from the applicants first salary payment from the College. The College adheres to the DBS Code of Practice and has policies covering the Recruitment of Ex-Offenders and the Secure Storage, Handling, Use, Retention and Disposal of Disclosures and Disclosure Information.     TRAINING

    All successful applicants will be required to undertake all mandatory training and update sessions and any appropriate training and development as required, including Health and Safety.
