About the Role

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Construction Manager to take a key leadership role on a major £200 million Compressor Station project in Wormington for a natural gas client.

The project is currently in the pre-construction phase, with construction planned to commence in the spring and work continuing well into 2030.

The Construction Manager – Major Projects will report to the Senior Project Manager and be accountable for the safe delivery of projects in line with contract requirements and United Infrastructure business procedures. The role is responsible for:

  • Safety – ensuring the project is constructed safely and compliantly.
  • Programme – ensuring construction activities are delivered to schedule.
  • Site Delivery – coordinating people, resources and interfaces to achieve successful project execution.

The Construction Manager will have line management responsibilities for all site based construction personnel and supervise and direct the work of subcontractors. They will work within the Project Leadership Team (PLT) comprising managerial, technical, SHEQ, project controls and commercial leads.

Key Responsibilities
1. Safe Delivery of the Construction Works
  • Lead and manage all site construction activities.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
  • Implement safe systems of work, permits, method statements and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate contractors, subcontractors and site supervision teams.

Key objective: Deliver the works safely with zero harm.

2. Programme and Productivity Management
  • Plan, coordinate and sequence construction activities.
  • Manage resources, plant, labour and materials.
  • Monitor progress against the construction programme and identify recovery actions where required.
  • Remove constraints and coordinate interfaces between disciplines and contractors.

Key objective: Deliver the works on time and maintain programme milestones.

3. Construction Coordination and Site Leadership
  • Lead day-to-day site operations and supervise construction teams.
  • Coordinate engineering, procurement, commissioning and stakeholder interfaces.
  • Resolve construction issues, clashes and access constraints.
  • Provide site reporting, forecasts and progress updates to project leadership.

Key objective: Ensure efficient execution of the works and achievement of project objectives.

4. Stakeholder, Client and Project Leadership Team Engagement
  • Work collaboratively with the Project Manager, Project Leadership Team and Client representatives.
  • Support decision-making by participating in project progress and planning meetings, identifying risks and opportunities for delivery improvements.
  • Ensure construction considerations are incorporated into engineering, procurement and programme decisions.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

Key objective: Align site delivery with the project's strategic, commercial and client requirements.

About You:
  • Vast experience as a Construction Manager delivering large-scale EPC projects. Experience within UK high-pressure gas infrastructure is preferred; however, applications are also welcomed from candidates with relevant backgrounds in heavy engineering, piping, or process-led projects within regulated, safety-critical environments, where skills and experience are transferable to this role.
  • Appropriate technical and professional qualifications, with evidence of a commitment to continued professional development.
  • Commercial contract, cost and programming awareness - experience with NEC or similar forms of contract
  • Able to demonstrate a senior level of professional competence in a main contractor EPC environment managing site health and safety. Ideally, holding the SMSTS / IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent.
  • Proven track record of successful delivery of projects from start to finish.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office programmes; incl. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint / Document Control software and Outlook.
  • Experience of similar works for / with National Grid, other gas networks or industrial process asset operators
  • Experience working with Tier-1 engineering and construction contractors in the UK on high value projects.
  • Willing to travel between sites and be on site at Wormington Compressor Station in Gloucestershire during the week.
