Job summary

The Bedford College Group is seeking a Compliance Operative to join the Estates and Facilities team at Bedford College. You will drive compliance inspections, coordinate preventative maintenance, and maintain accurate records to support regulatory standards across multiple sites.

With responsibility for health and safety, contractor oversight and responsive service to students and staff, you will contribute to safe, well-maintained buildings while travelling between Bedford College sites and

Qualifications

  • GCSE English and Maths; experience in maintenance, facilities, estates, construction or compliance environments.
  • Experience in planned maintenance and inspection activities, maintaining records and documentation.
  • Strong organisational skills; effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; proactive and reliable.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant training and travel across sites.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out compliance inspections, statutory testing and monitoring across fire safety, water hygiene, asbestos, electrical safety, gas systems, lifting equipment and plant machinery.
  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance, minor repairs and reactive maintenance; keep buildings safe and operational.
  • Maintain accurate compliance records using CAFM; update documentation and reports.
  • Monitor contractors on site; verify permits, risk assessments and safe working practices.
  • Provide responsive service to students, staff, visitors and contractors and support events across sites.

Salary/Benefits

Salary is between £25,467 and £28,482 per annum DOE and Qualifications, 27 days annual leave plus Bank holidays, People’s pension, Retail and Leisure Discounts, excellent professional and personal development opportunities, accessing college courses.

Hours/Weeks

37 hours per week – 52 weeks per year

About The Role

We are currently seeking a Compliance Operative to join our Estates and Facilities department at The Bedford College Group.

  • Compliance, Statutory Inspections & RiskManagement - Carry out compliance inspections, statutory testing and monitoring activities across areas including fire safety, water hygiene, asbestos, electrical safety, gas systems, lifting equipment and plant machinery, ensuring risks, defects and non-compliance issues are identified and reported promptly.
  • Preventative Maintenance & Repair Support - Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM), minor repairs and reactive maintenance activities, ensuring buildings, infrastructure, fixtures, equipment and tools remain safe, operational and fit for purpose.
  • Record Keeping, Audits & Compliance Administration - Maintain accurate compliance records using the CAFM system, update maintenance documentation, prepare reports and audit information, and monitor the completion of remedial actions to support regulatory compliance.
  • Contractor & Health and Safety Management - Monitor and support contractors on site, verify permits and risk assessments, ensure safe working practices, promote environmental sustainability, participate in emergency procedures, and contribute to maintaining high health and safety standards across the estate.
  • Customer Service, Flexibility & Professional Standards - Provide a responsive service to students, staff, visitors and contractors, support College events and operational activities across multiple sites, act as a first aider if required, and uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion, health and safety, and continuous professional development requirements.
About You
  • Qualifications, Compliance & Maintenance Knowledge - Holds GCSE English and Maths qualifications, with experience in maintenance, facilities, estates, construction or compliance environments, and a sound understanding of statutory compliance, health and safety, fire safety, water hygiene and building maintenance principles.
  • Inspection, Record Keeping & Technical Skills - Experienced in planned maintenance and inspection activities, maintaining accurate records and documentation, using CAFM or maintenance systems, and applying risk assessments and safe systems of work effectively.
  • Organisation, Communication & Teamwork - Demonstrates strong organisational and attention-to-detail skills, communicates effectively with a range of stakeholders, and works successfully both independently and as part of a team.
  • Professionalism, Initiative & Reliability - Able to work with minimal supervision, prioritise workloads effectively, maintain high standards of work, utilise basic IT systems including Microsoft Office, and consistently demonstrate a proactive, reliable and punctual approach.
  • Flexibility, Mobility & Commitment - Willing to undertake relevant training, work flexibly to meet operational needs, be available for occasional short-notice contact, and travel across all Bedford College Group sites with a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
