GSL Education in London is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to support students with severe and complex needs in a specialist setting. The role involves 1:1 support or small group work, helping students access learning and daily activities.

SEN Teaching Assistant - Complex and Severe Needs

Location: South East London- Southwark

GSL Education is currently recruiting a dedicated, resilient and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school supporting children and young people with severe and complex Special Educational Needs (SEN).

This is a rewarding full-time opportunity for an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant or Support Worker who is confident supporting students with complex needs, including students who are non-verbal, require personal care, and may display challenging behaviours.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who require a high level of individualised support. You may be supporting students on a 1:1 basis or within small groups, helping them to access learning, develop communication skills and participate in daily activities.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting students with severe and complex SEN
  • Working with non-verbal students and supporting different methods of communication
  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support
  • Supporting students with challenging behaviours
  • Assisting with personal care, including toileting and other daily care needs
  • Supporting students with sensory, physical and communication needs
  • Assisting with manual handling and physical support, where required
  • Building positive, trusting relationships with students
  • Working closely with teachers, therapists and other professionals
The Ideal Candidate

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEN
  • Experience supporting students with severe and complex needs
  • Experience working with non-verbal students
  • Confidence supporting students who may display challenging behaviours
  • A willingness to provide personal care
  • A calm, patient, caring and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Availability to work full-time

Manual handling experience or training would be highly desirable, although relevant experience and a willingness to support students with physical needs are also valued.
