Job summary

RBKC Careers is seeking a Council Tax Officer to deliver a supportive, accurate service helping residents navigate Council Tax billing, discounts and account support. You’ll be based in the Borough for three days each week, working with Benefits and Valuation teams to provide a joined-up experience for residents.

You will handle queries by phone, email and in person, explain complex calculations clearly, and maintain records with care while staying empathetic to residents in difficulty.

Qualifications

• Strong English and Mathematics, with ability to explain complex calculations clearly and respond to written correspondence.
• Good IT skills and experience using revenues and benefits systems alongside standard office applications.
• English qualification at Level 5 or above, or equivalent experience in clear communication.
• Experience in a busy Council Tax service is highly valued and beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Regular contact with residents by phone, email and face-to-face to assist with Council Tax queries.
• Explain discounts and exemptions and provide practical advice tailored to individual circumstances.
• Maintain accurate Council Tax records and update databases and system reports within timescales.
• Prepare cases for the Magistrates’ Court and support hearings when required.
• Collaborate with Benefits, Valuation, Citizens Advice and solicitors to ensure a joined-up service.
