Job summary

Sandwell Council seeks two Community Alarms Officers to join the Community Alarms Service. The posts involve assessing needs, installing telecare equipment and responding to emergency calls to help people live safely at home. You will operate a 24-hour control centre, with a rota and shift pattern including early and late hours.

You must have knowledge of community alarm services and a full driving licence to operate council fleet vehicles, including manual and automatic.

Responsibilities

• Identify emergency types, assess needs and take appropriate action across medical, social, housing, telecare and care-related calls.

• Receive and respond to calls from individuals and establishments monitored for alarms.
• Plan diary activity to ensure assessments and scheduled work are completed.
• Provide out-of-hours answering and filtering for repairs and other council services, liaising with trades operatives.
• Undertake safety checks on council vehicles used in the role.
• Provide emergency first aid, lifting and handling support where required.

Permanent opportunities available – 2 posts, 35 hours per week

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated individuals to join our Community Alarms Service. This is a rewarding role supporting people to live safely and independently in their own homes by assessing needs, installing telecare equipment and responding to emergency calls with professionalism, care and confidence.

About the role

As a Community Alarms Officer, you will undertake assessments, install and demonstrate a range of alarm and telecare equipment, and help ensure customers receive the right support at the right time.

You will also operate control centre equipment on a 24-hour basis, answering incoming calls in line with Telecare Service Association Code of Practice, policies, procedures and service standards.

Key responsibilities

• Identify the type of emergency, assess customer needs and take appropriate action across a wide range of issues including medical, social, housing, telecare and care-related calls.
• Provide a courteous, calm and professional service when supporting customers, colleagues, councillors, contractors and partner agencies.
• Receive and respond to calls from individuals and establishments monitored for lone worker, telecare, telehealth, fire, burglary and temperature control alerts.
• Plan diary activity to ensure assessments and scheduled work are completed effectively.
• Provide an out-of-hours answering and filtering service for repairs and other council services, prioritising calls and liaising with trades operatives, contractors and standby supervisors where required.
• Undertake safety checks on council vehicles used as part of the role.
• Provide emergency first aid, lifting and handling support where required.

What we are looking for

You will have a good working knowledge of community alarm services, including the assessment and installation of telecare equipment. You must also hold a full driving licence and be able to drive council fleet vehicles, including both manual and automatic vehicles.

Hours and working pattern

35 hours per week, working a rota pattern of 07:00 to 19:10 and 19:00 to 07:10 over a six-week rota.

Salary

Band D SCP 9 – 17 plus 17% shift allowance
