ABOUT ZENOBE

Our goal is to make clean power accessible, to accelerate the shift to zero carbon power and transport.

We’re building and operating the world’s most sophisticated battery systems to enable the uptake of more renewable power and accelerate fleet electrification, de-risking the transition to zero-emission transport at scale. We’ve been consistently innovative since our founding in 2017, achieving major industry firsts and using proprietary software and data analysis to optimise operational performance for our customers. At the end of their life, we repurpose electric vehicle batteries to provide clean power at depots, on construction sites, and film sets.

Today we have 730 MW of grid-scale battery storage operational and under construction and are the largest owner and operator of EV buses in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, supporting over 1,000 electric vehicles worldwide. In our first five years, we have raised nearly £1.8 billion in funding and expanded into other markets like the US. Our rapidly growing company is looking for highly talented and motivated people to join us.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are seeking an experienced and proactive Commissioning Manager to lead the execution and completion of some of the largest and most technologically advanced BESS systems in Europe.

The role will be key in ensuring the efficient and high-standard installation, energisation, and testing of our BESS assets. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in commissioning electrical infrastructure, ideally up to 400kV, with a good understanding of connecting energy infrastructure to the UK transmission network.

The Commissioning Manager will collaborate with project teams, engineering, third-party contractors, transmission operators, and NESO to ensure our BESS assets are installed, tested, and fully operational. The role encompasses all aspects of commissioning, including balance of plant, HV grid connection, and BESS systems.

This is an 18-month fixed-term contract with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate. It is a site-based role with opportunities for remote work; most sites are located in Scotland.

A TASTE OF THE DAY-TO-DAY

  • Lead and manage the commissioning process from initial planning to sign-off and handover.
  • Support quality control during design and installation, ensuring ITPs are in place, followed, and signed off.
  • Develop detailed commissioning plans, schedules, and procedures with contractors.
  • Oversee installation, testing, and startup of electrical systems including batteries, inverters, transformers, switchgear, control, and protection systems.
  • Coordinate BESS commissioning and testing with OEMs, ensuring full engagement with the ESO control desk.
  • Represent the client in Transmission Operator commissioning panel meetings, ensuring all requirements for site EON, ION, and FON are met.
  • Work with construction teams to ensure safety and compliance with relevant standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with project teams for seamless commissioning execution.
  • Complete compliance and testing documentation for project handover.
  • Monitor, track, and report on commissioning progress before and after energisation.

Health and Safety

  • Contribute to Zenobe's health and safety, wellbeing, and sustainability commitments by integrating these principles into daily work, promoting a safe environment, and adopting sustainable practices.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We encourage applicants who believe they can do the job well, even if they don't meet 100% of the requirements. We value collaborative, flexible, and empathetic individuals interested in creating a zero-carbon future.

  • Degree in electrical engineering or related field preferred.
  • 5-7+ years of experience in commissioning energy infrastructure, BESS experience is a plus.
  • Deep knowledge of HV electrical systems, transformers, switchgear, inverters, protection devices, and SCADA.
  • Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of grid code and achieving ION and FON.
  • Understanding of BESS technology is advantageous.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites.
