Job description

Commercial Gas Engineer

£18-£25 p/hr

Looking for Oxfordshire or close to engineer

Role purpose

To deliver safe, compliant and high-quality planned and reactive gas engineering services across a nationwide customer portfolio. The role will initially place particular value on proven commercial gas experience, while also supporting broader multi-skilled maintenance work where qualified and competent to do so. The engineer will represent the business professionally on site, manage allocated work efficiently, communicate clearly with customers and ensure all work records, certificates and close-out information are complete and accurate.

Key responsibilities
  • Undertake planned preventive maintenance (PPM), servicing, fault finding, repair, installation support and commissioning activities on commercial gas appliances and associated plant.
  • Attend reactive call-outs, diagnose faults, make safe where necessary and complete repairs within agreed service levels.
  • Carry out work safely and in accordance with current legislation, Gas Safe requirements, manufacturer guidance, risk assessments, method statements and company procedures.
  • Complete relevant service reports, gas safety documentation, job updates, photographs, timesheets and materials records accurately and promptly through the company systems.
  • Provide clear customer updates on arrival, progress, operational risks, required parts, follow-on works and completion.
  • Plan daily workload with the scheduling/helpdesk team, manage travel efficiently and escalated delays, access issues, safety concerns or client risks early.
  • Participate in the on-call rota, responding professionally to out-of-hours emergencies and following the agreed escalation process.
  • Support multi-skilled maintenance tasks within the limits of own competence and authorisation, including basic electrical, mechanical, plumbing or building-fabric works where appropriate.
  • Maintain company tools, vehicle, stock, PPE and test equipment in a safe, presentable and serviceable condition.
  • Identify additional remedial, lifecycle and compliance work, providing clear evidence and recommendations to support quotations and client decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with other engineers, subcontractors, contract managers and the helpdesk to deliver a consistent client service.
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Current Gas Safe registration and valid ACS qualifications relevant to the work undertaken. Commercial gas qualifications and experience are strongly preferred at appointment.
  • Demonstrable experience servicing, maintaining and fault finding commercial gas appliances and plant; experience with boilers, burners, warm-air units, catering equipment or plant rooms is advantageous.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel nationwide, including occasional overnight stays where operationally required.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise a mobile workload, communicate confidently with customers and produce accurate digital job records.
  • Sound knowledge of safe working practices, including RAMS, permit-to-work procedures and reporting of hazards, incidents and near misses.
  • Professional, dependable and customer-focused approach, with a commitment to quality, compliance and first-time resolution.
Desirable qualifications and experience
  • F-Gas qualification and practical experience working on air conditioning, refrigeration or heat-pump systems.
  • Multi-skilled maintenance experience across electrical, mechanical, plumbing, HVAC or building-fabric disciplines.
  • Additional commercial gas ACS modules relevant to the customer portfolio.
  • Experience working in facilities management, retail, education, healthcare, hospitality, industrial or multi-site environments.
  • Experience using CAFM/mobile job-management systems, electronic certification and client portals.
  • First Aid, IPAF, PASMA, asbestos awareness or similar site-access qualifications.
Performance expectations
  • Safety and compliance: Work safely at all times; maintain valid qualifications; complete required documentation and raise risks immediately.
  • Service delivery: Attend jobs as scheduled, meet agreed response/attendance standards and keep customers and the helpdesk informed.
  • Quality: Achieve a high first-time-fix standard, minimise repeat visits and leave sites clean, safe and operational.
  • Administration: Submit accurate job sheets, certificates, timesheets, materials and follow-on-work requirements promptly.
  • Customer service: Act professionally, communicate clearly and manage client concerns or complaints through the agreed escalation process.
  • Development: Maintain commercial gas competence and work toward agreed additional qualifications, including F-Gas and multi-skilled capability where relevant.
On-call and travel

This is a nationwide mobile role. The successful candidate must be willing and able to travel to customer sites throughout the UK. Participation in an on-call rota is a requirement of the role; rota frequency, call-out payment, overtime arrangements, travel/overnight arrangements and expenses will be confirmed in the employment offer and company policy.

Pay, benefits and progression

The hourly rate will be agreed within the range of £18.00 to £25.00 per hour, reflecting relevant qualifications, commercial gas capability, multi-skilled experience and performance. Pay, responsibilities and development objectives will be reviewed in line with company policy. The business supports development toward broader commercial gas, F-Gas and multi-skilled competence where there is a business need and the individual demonstrates capability.

  • Pension salary sacrifice: Pension salary-sacrifice arrangements may be available, subject to the company scheme, payroll requirements and written agreement. Participation may affect pensionable pay, statutory payments and other benefits.
  • Other benefits and allowances: Any vehicle, call-out payment, overtime, travel, overnight and expenses arrangements will be confirmed in the employment offer and relevant company policy.
Equal opportunity and safety

The company is committed to equal opportunities and to providing a safe, respectful working environment. Appointment is subject to the appropriate right-to-work, qualification, reference and any role-relevant checks.
