Job summary

South Staffordshire Limited is offering an apprenticeship opportunity in commercial management, supporting project teams with cost monitoring, cashflow and basic contract administration. You will learn how commercial reports and cost updates are prepared, and gain hands-on experience with variations, EWN, and compensation events.

You will develop a practical understanding of contracts, payment mechanisms, subcontractor accounts, and final accounts while actively participating in apprenticeship

Qualifications

  • Interest in a career in commercial management, quantity surveying, construction, civil engineering or utilities.
  • Willingness to learn core commercial principles including cost control, forecasting, procurement, applications, invoicing and change management.
  • Good numeracy and confidence with figures, spreadsheets and written information.
  • Strong attention to detail and methodical record keeping.

Responsibilities

  • Support project teams in monitoring costs, cashflow, and overall project performance.
  • Assist with basic contract administration tasks and learn contracts management.
  • Learn how commercial reports, cost reviews and project financial updates are prepared and maintained.
  • Learn to prepare and organise records for variations, Early Warning Notices, and Compensation Events.
  • Maintain project files, trackers and commercial documentation per IGL processes.
  • Attend project and commercial meetings, take notes, follow actions and contribute to discussions.
  • Develop understanding of contracts, payment mechanisms, subcontractor accounts, valuations and final accounts.
  • Participate in apprenticeship learning, reviews and development activities.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude and commitment to IGL’s values, policies and procedures.

Job description

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support project teams in monitoring costs, cashflow, and overall project performance.
  • Assist with basic contract administration tasks and learn how contracts are managed throughout a project.
  • Learn how commercial reports, cost reviews and project financial updates are prepared and maintained.
  • Learn how to prepare and organise record for variations, Early Warning Notices, Compensation Events.
  • Help maintain accurate project files, trackers and commercial documentation in line with IGL processes.
  • Attend project and commercial meetings where appropriate, taking notes, following actions and building confidence in commercial discussions.
  • Develop an understanding of contracts, payment mechanisms, subcontractor accounts, valuations and final account processes.
  • Participate fully in apprenticeship learning, reviews and development activities, applying learning back into the workplace.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude, attention to detail, willingness to learn and commitment to IGL’s values, policies and procedures.
What you’ll need:
Experience / Knowledge
  • A genuine interest in developing a career in commercial management, quantity surveying, construction, civil engineering or utilities.
  • Willingness to learn core commercial principles including cost control, forecasting, procurement, applications, invoicing and change management.
  • Good numeracy skills and confidence working with figures, spreadsheets and written information.
  • Strong attention to detail with an organised, methodical approach to tasks and record keeping.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to ask questions and seek guidance.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and build positive working relationships with colleagues, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Commitment to learning about health, safety, wellbeing and responsible working practices within office and site-based environments.
Education / Qualifications
  • Working towards, or willing to enrol on, a relevant apprenticeship route in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Construction, Built Environment or a related discipline.
  • GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, at Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English (desirable and may be required depending on the apprenticeship provider).
  • Basic IT skills, including Microsoft Office and Excel, with a willingness to learn IGL systems and commercial trackers.
