Job description

We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and skilled College Nurse to join the Student Services team at Brockenhurst College on Term Time Only Basis, 37 hours per week. In return, you will receive a competitive salary of £36,950 - £38,821 pro rata.

We are a high-achieving college who attract around 2,800 sixth form students across the region each year. We are based within the stunning New Forest National Park and offer our students a huge range of courses and superb facilities.

About the role:

In this key role, you will lead and manage a comprehensive health and wellbeing programme that supports the assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and promotion of student health across the college community.

As the College Nurse, you will play a vital part in ensuring that students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn by delivering high-quality health services, offering advice and interventions on a wide range of physical and mental health concerns, and working collaboratively with internal pastoral, safeguarding, and counselling teams, as well as with external health professionals and agencies.

This is a dynamic and student-centred position that requires sound clinical judgement, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to inclusive and preventative health care in an educational setting.


Responsibilities as our College Nurse will include:

  • Being a member of the College’s first aid team of staff responding to first aid needs of staff, students and visitors
  • Overseeing the safe storage of emergency/prescribed medication
  • Regular meetings with college first aiders to ensure they feel confident and capable of undertaking their duties effectively.
  • Ensure that the First Aid rota is up to date and that the college has appropriate cover across all sites.
  • Manage the training needs of all college first aiders, including arranging training as required.
  • Support staff in planning residential trips and offsite activities to ensure that students with medical conditions are appropriately supported, and that staff have the necessary knowledge and training if required.
  • Liaising with students, parents/carers and all stakeholders to ensure that appropriate care and support is provided during their time at college for students who have specific/long term health conditions
  • Overseeing the uploading of medical information and keep robust records using the College computer systems that may require staff use in the event of an emergency
  • Overseeing emergency medical plans and information working closely with families and the Health and Safety Partner
  • Supporting student’s mental health needs, working closely with the Intensive Support Team to ensure students are safe and supported.
  • Providing treatment as appropriate to students suffering illness or injury on the College premises during the day
  • Effectively liaising with other health professionals.
  • Liaising with other members of the Pastoral and Welfare Team including Counsellors, Curriculum Progression Managers, the Health and Safety Partner to promote health and well-being to students and staff
  • Providing individual health advice, including sexual health and contraception to students at regular ‘clinic’ sessions

As our College Nurse, you’ll ideally have:

  • A current nursing qualification or equivalent
  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Experience with working with young people
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a nursing role
  • Knowledge of legislation relating to confidentiality, child protection and data protection
  • Knowledge of local area health services
  • Good Interpersonal skills
  • Own car with business use insurance
  • Able to travel between college sites across the Forest on occasions
  • Some flexibility in working hours to cover for colleague where required
