CNC Machinist (Turning, Milling & Programming) - Huddersfield

Our client is recruiting an experienced CNC Machinist with strong turning, milling and programming skills across Fanuc, Siemens and ProtoTrak controls.

Role overview

You'll be hands‑on across CNC turning and milling, setting, operating and programming machines to produce high‑quality, bespoke components for industrial customers. The role is ideal for someone who can move between manual and CNC work, interpret drawings confidently and take ownership of programmes from first‑off to production.

Key responsibilities
  • Set, operate and programme CNC lathes and milling machines to tight tolerances.
  • Write, edit and optimise CNC programmes; carry out first‑off inspections and in‑process checks.
  • Work across multiple control systems: Fanuc, Siemens and ProtoTrak.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances and basic GD&T.
  • Select appropriate tooling, workholding, speeds and feeds to maximise quality and cycle times.
  • Use precision measuring equipment (micrometers, verniers, bore/thread gauges, etc.) to verify parts.
  • Maintain a safe, clean and organised workstation and complete basic production documentation.
Essential skills and experience
  • Proven experience as a CNC Machinist in a precision/sub‑contract engineering environment.
  • Strong practical skills in both CNC turning and CNC milling (setting and operating).
  • Confident programming and editing on Fanuc and Siemens controls.
  • Hands‑on experience with ProtoTrak controls (or very similar conversational controls).
  • Ability to read and work from engineering drawings and 3D models where required.
  • Comfortable using standard metrology tools and working to defined tolerances.
  • Good problem‑solving mindset, with attention to quality, safety and continuous improvement.
Desirable (but not essential)
  • Experience with twin‑spindle / live tooling or mill‑turn machines.
  • Basic CAM exposure (e.g. Fusion 360, Mastercam) with willingness to develop further.
  • Background in gear cutting, gear grinding or heavy industrial components (aligned to the company’s core work).
Working hours and pay
  • Monday-Thursday: 07:00am - 4:00pm
  • Friday: 07:00 - 1:15pm

Pay rate: £17-£18 per hour (depending on experience and skill level).
