Job summary

THG Ingenuity is seeking a Database Engineer to run and improve our database platform. The role is hands-on across on-prem and Google Cloud, with opportunities to modernise the estate and work with a small team of DB engineers.

You will ensure security, reliability and performance across production systems and contribute to ongoing migration and automation efforts. You will participate in a rotating on-call rota, with occasional out-of-hours work for deployments and incident response, and

Qualifications

• Essential PostgreSQL administration including upgrades, backups and replication
• Production SQL Server administration with backups and maintenance
• Strong SQL writing and execution plan reading
• Experience deploying DB infra on Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
• HA/DR architectures and replication technology expertise
• Backup, restore and recovery expertise
• Experience with GitHub and CI/CD workflows and change management
• Scripting for automation (Python/PowerShell/Bash)
• Monitoring and alerting with enterprise tools
• Willingness to join rotating on-call and handle incidents
• Clear written and verbal communication with engineering teams

Responsibilities

• Install, configure, maintain and upgrade PostgreSQL and SQL Server across dev, test and prod
• Ensure DB security, patching and compliance with standards
• Own backup, restore and maintenance strategies, and test recovery
• Maintain security, access control and audit practices
• Deploy and manage DB environments in GCP using Compute Engine or Cloud SQL
• Configure networking, storage and security for cloud DBs
• Support the remaining on-prem footprint and a hybrid estate
• Contribute to migration, consolidation, data migration, testing and cutover
• Build HA and DR solutions, including replication
• Identify and resolve performance issues with queries and indexing
• Automate provisioning, patching, backups and routine maintenance
• Keep scripts in GitHub, delivered via CI/CD and change management
• Contribute to database standards, runbooks and documentation
• Participate in rotating on-call and incident response
• Provide day-to-day support to engineering and infrastructure teams
• Take part in post-incident reviews
