Job description

Job summary

An opportunity has become available to join the Older Persons Medicine team on ward 12 at James Cook University Hospital. Working as a Health Care Support Worker within the team, you will help care for 27 patients.

Candidates should have a passion for caring for patients with complex medical needs and frailty syndromes, including Dementia, Delirium, and Falls.

Our vision is to provide high-quality, specialist multidisciplinary care to older people in an environment that is supportive and friendly, with an ethos of continuous improvement.

Main duties of the job

Post holders will be appointed at band 2 or band 3 depending upon qualifications.

Band 2 requirements: Willingness to undertake all relevant training and qualifications if wishing to develop into a band 3 role.

Band 3 requirements: Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or GCSE equivalent (A-C/ 4-9).

Qualifications include:

  • Care certificate
  • Level 3 vocational qualification
  • or short courses and completion of competency workbook equivalent to Level 3 in patient and clinical care duties
  • or equivalent knowledge and experience in clinical care duties to Level 3, including theoretical knowledge, practical procedures, clinical observations, and knowledge of relevant legislation.

There is a clear framework for progression from band 2 to band 3, including the completion of relevant qualifications.

Person Specification

Knowledge

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and active listening skills.
  • Time-keeping, planning, and prioritisation skills.
  • Basic IT skills for electronic patient records and Trust systems.
  • Analytical and judgement skills for decision-making based on observations and metrics.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation underpinning care provision.

Experience

  • Experience in health or social care.
  • Experience of undertaking and recording clinical observations and escalating changes or findings.

Qualifications for Band 3

  • Numeracy and Literacy Level 2 or equivalent (GCSE A-C/4-9).
  • Care certificate.
  • Level 3 vocational qualification or equivalent experience in clinical care duties.

Qualifications for Band 2

  • Must complete the Care Certificate within 6 months of probation, with training provided. This is an NHS entry-level position.
