Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic multidisciplinary team conducting clinical trials in infectious diseases and general internal medicine. The successful candidate will play a key role as an investigator in drug development and clinical trials, ensuring participant safety and compliance with ethical and regulatory standards. Key responsibilities include assessing participant suitability, obtaining consent, conducting comprehensive medical assessments (including physical and exams), interpreting ECGs and lab tests, and addressing safety concerns. Experience in acutely unwell patient assessment and ALS certification is essential.

Based primarily at the NIHR UCLH Clinical Research Facility, the post holder will also support neurology and cardiology trials. Applicants with broad medical backgrounds, including GIM, Infectious Diseases, General Practice, and Emergency Medicine, are encouraged to apply.

The post offers access to specialist resources in Clinical Virology, Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases and involves collaboration with clinical teams, fellows, nurses, and biomedical scientists. Ideal candidates will have outpatient experience and strong communication skills with primary care providers.

While the post covers basic salary, additional payment is available for out-of-hours cover when patients stay after 5 pm.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to work as a Clinical Research Fellow taking responsibility for the coordination and support of vaccine studies and other relevant clinical trials with a focus on infectious diseases, such as mpox and influenza. The successful candidate will ensure strict adherence to trial protocols and regulatory standards, conduct thorough medical assessments, and maintain accurate research records. They will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, provide medical oversight during trials, and manage patient care in compliance with ethical and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.

Daily duties include evaluating trial data, managing adverse events, and ensuring informed patient consent. The post holder will engage with primary care GPs, sponsors, and research teams to ensure effective communication. The post holder will respond to urgent medical queries and clinical emergencies in line with ALS RESUS council guidelines and will facilitate regular emergency scenario readiness testing.

Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Medical qualification MBBS with Full GMC Registration. NB: Non-UK trained doctors must be on the GMC register by date of appointment.
  • Valid Resus Council Advanced Life Support (ALS) training certification
  • Completed Foundations Training with Foundation competencies or equivalent
  • GCP trained by start date
Experience
  • A minimum of two years' post-registration clinical experience, including experience in outpatient care. Applicants must demonstrate familiarity with UK healthcare systems, clinical governance standards, and outpatient clinical practice, either through work undertaken within the UK or through equivalent experience in a comparable healthcare setting.
  • Familiarity with principle of clinical research including Good Clinical Practice.
  • Experience of phlebotomy and cannulation
