Clinical Fellow in Clinical Virology (ST3+)

An opportunity has arisen for a 12-month) fixed term post in Clinical Virology at UCLH.

The post will involve working at Senior Clinical Fellow (ST3+) level within the Department of Clinical Virology under the supervision of Virology consultants. The Clinical Virology department provides a liaison to the diagnostic virology laboratory, while providing clinical teams in the various hospitals that make up UCLH NHS Foundation Trust with clinical advice. The department works with the teams in Infection Prevention and Control as well as microbiology and Infectious Diseases to provide a comprehensive Infection Service.

This post would be ideal for someone who is looking to gain further experience in Clinical Virology with a view to pursuing specialty training in Infection or for a senior virologist looking for further experience in advanced diagnostics.

Main duties of the job

The clinical fellow will undertake the role of the virology 'specialty registrar' and will participate in the work of the department in clinical liaison, laboratory and infection control, under supervision of the consultants. This includes authorization (sign-out) of laboratory reports, dealing with telephone enquiries from clinicians and participating in ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings. There is a weekly viral hepatitis clinic that they would attend.

Specifically, this post has been created so that the clinical fellow can They will work alongside the microbiology/virology consultants and laboratory staff to implement and monitor the introduction of mNGS as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice. Evaluation of the service after its implementation will be required with the post holder acting as a key point of contact for this.

They will liaise closely with clinical colleagues concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, and prevention of infections.

Where appropriate, experience in all sections of the virology laboratory will be provided.

Additionally, the successful candidate will be on the on-call microbiology specialty registrar Rota. Specialist registrars who have completed the induction period join in the clinical advice on-call rota on Monday to Friday for Microbiology (including Virology) and on Saturday/Sunday for microbiology alone. As appropriate there is a consultant Microbiologist and Virologist second on-call.

Knowledge and Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification Must hold full registration with and hold a current licence to practise, from the GMC at time of intended start date.
  • Be eligible to work in the UK.
  • Additional related qualifications, e.g. MRCP or equivalent, Diploma in Medical Microbiology, MSc in Microbiology, FRCPath Part 1 and/or Part 2
Experience
  • Be able to provide complete details of their employment history
  • Have evidence that their career progression is consistent with their personal circumstances.
  • Have evidence that their present level of achievement and performance is commensurate with the totality of their period of training
  • Not have previously relinquished or been released / removed from a medical virology/microbiology training programme, except under exceptional circumstances.
  • Not previously resigned, been removed from, or relinquished a post or programme with resultant failure to gain the award of a FACD5.2, except under extraordinary circumstances and on the production of evidence of satisfactory outcome from appropriate remediation
  • Previous experience of working within or observing a department of clinical microbiology/virology
  • Experience of laboratory work (including research) relevant to medical virology
  • Experience of infection liaison to haematology or oncology services
  • Prior experience of metagenomic sequencing
