Job summary

Prospero Teaching Newcastle Health & Social Care is seeking compassionate Waking Night Child Support Workers to support children and young people with SEND and SEMH in residential and supported living settings across the Durham area.

You will provide overnight care, help young people feel safe and supported, and contribute to their confidence, independence, and emotional wellbeing through a calm, patient approach during night shifts.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals.
• Knowledge or experience supporting children with SEND and SEMH helps.
• A calm, patient and resilient approach is essential.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills are required.
• Understanding of safeguarding and child protection principles is necessary.
• Ability to work independently during night shifts.
• Flexible and reliable with a commitment to delivering high-quality care.

Responsibilities

• Providing high-quality, child-centred support during waking night shifts.
• Building positive and trusting relationships with children and young people.
• Supporting children with SEND, autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and SEMH needs.
• Carrying out regular welfare checks and monitoring wellbeing overnight.
• Supporting with personal care and daily living tasks where required.
• Managing and de-escalating challenging behaviours using appropriate techniques and training.
• Recording observations, incidents, and safeguarding concerns accurately.
• Administering medication in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Completing housekeeping tasks to maintain a safe, homely environment.
• Conducting thorough handovers with daytime staff teams.
