An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated higher psychiatry resident doctor (ST4 or above) with an interest in leadership, management, and quality improvement to join South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust as a chief registrar.
The chief registrar role provides higher residents with roughly 40% protected time (including 20% special interest time) to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management, and quality improvement. Participants will benefit from the Royal College of Physicians’ (RCP’s) bespoke development programme, which will be applied in a supported environment offering autonomy, flexibility, and support to develop projects addressing key local challenges and priorities. These may include service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce, and sustainability.
The chief registrar will be mentored by the Chief Medical Officer and will gain insights into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as a deeper understanding of NHS structures and stakeholders.
The role includes attendance at modules delivered as part of the RCP’s development programme, covering topics such as change management, team culture and development, quality improvement, leadership, influencing, and personal resilience.
This is a fixed-term, 12-month role where approximately 40% of the role (including 20% special interest) is as ‘Chief Registrar’, with the remainder participating in the usual training route, including the acute on-call rota.
Applications should be discussed with your educational supervisor and training programme director (TPD), and permission to apply must be granted by the TPD.
