Newham University Hospital is looking for applicants for two available Chief Registrar posts for the 2025/6 training year starting in August 2025. Applications are sought from ST4+ trainees in Emergency Medicine and Care of the Elderly Medicine or equivalent (Locally Employed Doctor with equivalent experience).
The Chief Registrar role provides senior trainees with 40-50% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Those appointed will also be supported to attend the Royal College of Physicians' (RCP) year-long bespoke development programme. The aim of this programme is to give appointees the skills and knowledge that may be put into practice in an environment that provides autonomy and flexibility to develop and support projects that address key local challenges and priorities. This may include staff health and wellbeing, service improvement, engagement and morale, education and training, workforce, and sustainability.

The Chief Registrar will be mentored by a senior clinical leader within the organisation and gain a unique insight into NHS leadership and management processes, as well as deeper knowledge of NHS structures and stakeholders.
In your clinical role, you will be working as part of a clinical team providing high quality care, dependent on your specialty background. You will work within the bounds of your level of competence, and you will be supervised by the relevant consultants in your specialty.
Based in vibrant East London, Newham Hospital is at the heart of the local community serving and caring for one of the most diverse populations in England. It is a district general hospital with a major undergraduate teaching role. It provides all the services expected of a local hospital, including emergency care, surgery, women's and children's health, maternity services, specialist medicine and elderly care. The Emergency Department is a Trauma Unit (the Major Trauma Unit is the Royal London Hospital and part of the same Trust), runs a combined Medical and ED SDEC, contains a Clinical Decision Unit and a separate Paediatric ED. Chief Registrars in Emergency Medicine will have the opportunity to work across all areas of the department. The Older Peoples Service has a bed-base of 78 across four wards including an Acute Stroke Unit. The service cares for patients with both acute and complex needs and provides a range of inpatient and outpatient services. These include Stroke and TIA, Frailty and Falls ED in-reach, Virtual Frailty Ward, Extended Primary Care Team, Nursing Home Liaison, Diagnostic Memory Services, Dementia and Delirium Team, as well as liaison with Medical and Surgical Teams in addition to general Care of the Elderly outpatient clinics.

This is a fixed-term role for minimum of 12 months. The role can be undertaken in training or out of programme (training or experience).
