Job description

Job Description: Chemical Process Engineer, United Kingdom

Company: Pure Alchemi

Location: United Kingdom

Job Category: Other

EU work permit required: Yes

Salary: 35k - 40k (Depending on experience)

Pure Alchemi (www.pure-alchemi.com) is an ambitious clean-tech start-up developing next-generation technologies for Net Zero and Negative Emissions. We engineer circular, sustainable energy systems by converting industrial waste and biomass into clean fuels, high-value materials, and captured carbon. Our team combines innovation and impact—working across advanced combustion, CCUS, and sustainable chemical processes.

We are expanding our engineering team and seek a Chemical/Process Engineer to support the scale-up of our lab-to-industry technologies. This is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of decarbonisation innovation in a high-impact start-up.

You will join a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs to design, model, and develop scalable chemical processes for sustainable manufacturing and low-carbon energy systems. Responsibilities include process design, simulation, lab-to-pilot scale operations, and techno-economic evaluation of technologies such as waste valorisation, thermal conversion, and carbon capture and utilisation. This role is ideal for candidates passionate about applied R&D, systems thinking, and sustainable innovation, contributing at the intersection of engineering, climate tech, and circular economy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Simulate and optimise chemical and thermal processes using tools like Aspen Plus or HYSYS.
  • Design systems for advanced combustion, waste-to-fuel conversion, and resource recovery.
  • Analyse mass and energy balances, emissions profiles, and process performance.
  • Support R&D activities to scale lab technologies toward commercial deployment.
  • Conduct techno-economic assessments (TEA) and sustainability evaluations of emerging technologies.
  • Work collaboratively in an agile environment to solve engineering challenges and iterate quickly.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 1st class or 2.1 honours degree in Chemical Engineering or a related field; exceptional experience may be considered otherwise.
  • Proficiency with process simulation tools such as Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of chemical process design, thermodynamics, and reactor modelling.
  • Problem-solving skills, adaptability, and independence in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Right to work in the UK.
  • Experience in chemical or process engineering roles, process scale-up, intensification, or TEA.
  • Exposure to start-up or R&D environments.
  • Interest in circular economy, industrial decarbonisation, or clean energy solutions.
  • Master’s degree or research experience in a relevant engineering field.
Why Join Us?
  • Work at the core of a mission-driven company addressing real-world environmental challenges.
  • Collaborate with pioneering researchers, engineers, and innovators.
  • Shape technologies that will redefine energy and material production.
  • Enjoy a flexible, supportive work culture with growth opportunities in a rapidly scaling business.
  • Make a meaningful impact—your ideas will help drive sustainable change.
