Affinity Fire Engineering is a specialised fire safety consultancy firm. We have an exciting opportunity to join our growing team as a CFD Engineer!

Often, uncertainty arises into what might happen in a building during a fire. It would be your role to reduce this uncertainty through CFD modelling and other engineering analysis tools. This might be modelling the movement of smoke through a building, determining the risk of fire spread via radiation, or examining an automated system of fans and vents to keep people safe under fire.

The role doesn’t require previous experience with fire or construction. Our team of Fire Engineers, CFD Engineers, and surveyors have a wealth of experience to draw from and we’re committed to CPD and training to ensure that our engineers progress within the industry. We’re looking for people who can approach these problems analytically and develop further expertise in this domain.

We are an organisation with a family feel, one that believes strongly in supporting equality, diversity and inclusion. We believe in creating a workplace environment that is open and inclusive and want our offices to be a happy and motivational environment for all our employees where everyone can be themselves.

Our company values are ‘people, quality and integrity’. It is of upmost importance to us that our engineers have a good work-life balance, and we go the extra mile to ensure that workloads are achievable within regular working hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop methodologies to analyse buildings, fire, and smoke movement.
  • Undertake the analyses and report on the results.
  • Use these results to advise our clients on how to approach fire and smoke within their buildings.
  • Review the legislation, guidance, and clients’ objectives to identify the best fire safety solutions.
  • Investigate, study, and further develop approaches to these analyses.
  • Support other members of the team.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES:

We are looking for people with strong technical and analytical skills, but we are also looking for the following qualities:

  • A creatively geared person who can understand risk and provide solutions.
  • A self-starter who is driven by results.
  • Someone who takes personal pride in the quality of their work.
  • You must be pro-active and enthusiastic.
  • A basis of understanding commercial management and resourcing.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team player who is willing to support and share knowledge with colleagues in the office.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • An engineering degree which includes an element of fluid dynamics.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working as an engineer, including the use of CFD for the purposes of fire safety/smoke ventilation.
  • Experience in the construction industry or design of buildings with respect to fire.
  • An understanding and pro-active interest in the applications and limitations of engineering tools.
  • All models are wrong, but some are useful. An ability to not just to generate CFD models but to determine the right question.

BENEFITS:

  • Enrolment to company bonus scheme, paid twice annually.
  • Hybrid working policy with a real focus on work/life balance.
  • 33 days annual leave inc. bank holidays
  • Currently trialling a 9-day fortnight where employees get every other Friday off with no expectation to make up the hours!
