Job summary

South Gloucestershire Council is hiring a Casual Care Responder to provide planned and emergency home visits within the community. You will support residents with urgent needs, using a 4x4 vehicle and equipment to ensure safety and independence. A DBS check and driving licence are required, with pro-rata hours and a casual contract.

The role involves recording visits, collaborating with practitioners, and following safeguarding procedures to protect vulnerable people in the community.

How you'll make a difference

As a Casual Care Responder, you will will work directly within the community, providing both planned and emergency care visits to individuals in their own homes.

Working as part of the Rapid Response Service, you will support residents across SouthGloucestershire who use pendant alarm systems, delivering timely assistance during emergencies and periods of crises. This essential service enables people to remain safe, independent and comfortable in their own homes, while helping to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and supporting wider community wellbeing.

What you will be doing

• Supporting residents in their own homes following a crisis, you will help to improve their quality of life, promote independence and enable them to remain safe at home.
• It will be your responsibility to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all visits, ensuring compliance with council policies, procedures and professional standards.
• Working collaboratively with practitioners and other professionals, you will implement care and support plans, report concerns and make referrals where appropriate, following safeguarding procedures to help protect vulnerable people.
• As part of the Rapid Response Service, you will have access to a dedicated 4x4 response vehicle and will often be the first person on scene when responding to falls and emergency calls generated through pendant alarm systems. You will support residents using specialist equipment, including a Raizer lifting chair.
• You will deliver person-centred care and support to individuals experiencing a crisis. This may include people recovering from illness, living with reduced mobility, or those whose usual carer is temporarily unable to provide support.

What we need from you

• A key requirement of this role is the ability to demonstrate compassion, empathy and understanding when supporting people with a range of physical and emotional needs.
• You will need to build positive relationships with residents, providing reassurance and support during what can often be challenging or distressing situations. As some individuals may display behaviours that challenge, a flexible, resilient and person-centred approach is essential, both in people's homes and within the wider community.
• Given the nature of the role, you must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• As you will often be responding to emergencies and supporting people in crisis, it is essential that you can remain calm, make sound decisions and work effectively under pressure whilst maintaining a high standard of care.
• Previous experience working in a care or support setting, along with an understanding of the Care Act 2014 and related legislation, would be advantageous but not essential.
• You may hold a relevant vocational qualification, such as a QCF or NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care, or a CQC Care Certificate. If you do not already hold the Care Certificate, you will be required to complete it upon appointment.

What you need to know

• We provide a response service of 7 days a week between the hours of 7am – 10:15pm.
• This is a casual contract, working ad hoc hours per week, your salary is pro-rata to hours worked.
• Your uniform and equipment will be provided.
• You will be predominately working out of our office in Yate and in and around the community.
• You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence with regular access to a vehicle or have an alternative means of travel.
• Business insurance will need to be added to your insurance policy and you can claim back mileage expenses.
• Please note that due to the nature of this role, it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained.
