Job summary

Mears Group is seeking a skilled Carpenter to join our Birmingham Voids team. You will refurbish and prepare empty social housing properties for new tenants, carrying out a wide range of carpentry repairs and installations.

The role requires experience in first and second fix carpentry, a full UK driving licence, and the ability to work independently to meet void turnaround targets. A company van and fuel card are provided.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Carry out carpentry repairs, renewals and installations within void properties.
  • Replace and repair internal doors, frames and ironmongery.
  • Fit kitchens, worktops, pelmets and end panels.
  • Install skirting boards, boxing-in and joinery items.
  • Repair timber flooring, stairs, handrails and banisters.
  • Complete first and second fix carpentry works on refurbishments.
  • Record works and materials using handheld devices or job systems.
  • Identify defects and report issues for action.

Salary up to £37,000 per annum, plus, company van & fuel card

42.5 hours per week (8-5 Monday- Friday)

About the role:

We're looking for a skilled and reliable Carpenter to join our Birmingham Voids team, helping to refurbish and prepare empty social housing properties for new tenants.

This is a hands-on role where you'll carry out a wide range of carpentry repairs, renewals and installations within void properties. From replacing internal doors and kitchen units to completing finishing works and general refurbishment tasks, you'll play a key role in ensuring homes are safe, secure and ready to let.

Working as part of a dedicated voids team, you'll be responsible for delivering high-quality workmanship, meeting turnaround targets and maintaining excellent standards across Birmingham's housing stock. We're looking for someone who takes pride in their work, can work independently and consistently delivers a right-first-time approach.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Carry out carpentry repairs, renewals and installations within void properties
  • Replace and repair internal doors, frames, architraves, locks, hinges and ironmongery
  • Fit kitchens including units, worktops, pelmets and end panels
  • Install and replace skirting boards, boxing-in, shelving and other joinery items
  • Repair or replace timber flooring, stair components, handrails and banisters
  • Complete first and second fix carpentry works as part of property refurbishments
  • Make good following maintenance and refurbishment works, including minor patch repairs where required
  • Work alongside other trades to ensure properties meet lettable standards
  • Identify and rectify defects to improve the condition and presentation of void properties
  • Ensure all work is completed to a high standard and in line with health and safety regulations
  • Accurately record completed works, materials used and property updates using handheld devices or job management systems
  • Identify and report any additional repairs or property defects requiring attention
  • Support the achievement of void turnaround and property handover targets
  • Maintain tools, equipment and company vehicle in good working order
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures and health and safety requirements
  • Deliver high-quality workmanship with a strong focus on right-first-time repairs and refurbishments
Role Criteria:
  • Proven experience as a Carpenter within domestic maintenance, refurbishment or void property works
  • Experience completing first and second fix carpentry works to a high standard
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ability to work independently and manage workloads to achieve void turnaround targets
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Good knowledge of property refurbishment and lettable standards
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working practices
  • Ability to use handheld devices or job management systems to record completed works
  • Flexible approach with the ability to work collaboratively alongside other trades
  • Commitment to delivering high standards of workmanship and customer service
