Job summary

Milton Keynes City Council is seeking a practical Caretaking Technician to maintain safety and readiness of council buildings across sites. You will carry out routine maintenance, safety checks, basic repairs and set up rooms for meetings and events, while supporting deliveries and contractors.

This site-based role requires a clean manual driving licence, the ability to travel between sites, and a focus on health and safety. DBS checks will be part of pre-employment screening.

Qualifications

  • National Vocational Qualification Level 2 or at least three GCSEs A*-C including English and maths.
  • Full clean manual driving licence and ability to work across sites.
  • Health and safety knowledge including COSHH; identify and reduce risks.
  • Comfortable using everyday digital tools and recording work accurately.
  • Able to work independently, manage workload and adapt priorities.
  • Clear respectful communication with residents, visitors, contractors and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Complete regular building and fire-safety checks, keep accurate records and report hazards or problems promptly.
  • Use council vehicles, tools, handheld devices and property systems safely and in line with council requirements.
  • Welcome contractors, record their attendance, manage permits to work and monitor activity while they're on site.
  • Support deliveries, office moves, emergency clean-ups and minor outdoor work, including clearing snow, ice and weeds when required

Job Introduction

We're recruiting a Caretaking Technician to help keep a varied portfolio of council buildings safe, welcoming and ready for use.

You'll complete routine maintenance, repairs, safety checks and practical caretaking tasks across different sites.

You'll also prepare rooms for meetings, events and conferences, support deliveries and contractors, and respond to building-related issues.

This is a rewarding, practical role where your work will help colleagues, residents and visitors use our buildings safely and confidently.

The role involves driving council vehicles, using tools and equipment, moving furniture and working both indoors and outdoors.

You'll need a full, clean manual driving licence and the ability to travel between sites.

Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you'll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Main Responsibility

The Ideal Candidate
  • A good standard of education to National Vocational Qualification Level 2, or at least three GCSEs at grades A* to C, including English and maths.
  • You'll hold a full, clean manual driving licence and be able to work across a variety of sites.
  • Practical and safety-focused, you'll understand health and safety requirements, including the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, and know how to identify and reduce risks.
  • Confident using everyday digital tools, you'll be able to record work accurately and learn the systems needed for the role.
  • Comfortable working independently, you'll organise your workload, respond calmly to unexpected problems and adjust priorities when needed.
  • With a clear and respectful communication style, you'll work well with residents, visitors, contractors and colleagues while demonstrating our values of being Dedicated, Respectful and Collaborative.
Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle

To be successful in this role, you'll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we'll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We're unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received.

As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we'll carry out a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Roles are either 'site based' or 'home based'.

Site based roles are mainly based at the workplace, with the option to work from home for up to two days a week, depending on service needs.

Home based roles are mainly based at home, with the expectation of attending the workplace up to one day a week.

The working arrangement for each role is set by the manager, based on service requirements.
