Job summary

Milton Keynes City Council is recruiting a Building Surveyor – Housing to join our Housing Maintenance and Investment team. You will undertake a wide range of surveying and project management activities to ensure homes are safe, well-maintained and compliant.

This site-based role requires a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. Interviews are scheduled for 7th October 2026 and we are committed to delivering high-quality housing services for residents.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Building Surveying with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Strong knowledge of housing legislation, fire safety and building regs.
  • Able to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication with residents, contractors and colleagues.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake building surveying and project management duties for housing repairs, maintenance, improvements and disrepair projects across the housing portfolio.
  • Inspect properties and diagnose maintenance, investment and improvement requirements for disrepair cases.
  • Work closely with residents, leaseholders, contractors and colleagues to resolve issues and meet regulatory standards and timeframes.
  • Monitor contractor performance and completed works for quality, value for money, compliance and timely delivery.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, specifications, cost information and recommendations to support investment decisions.
  • Manage programmes of work to ensure on-time delivery within budget and standards.

Roles are either ‘site based’ or ‘home based’.

Site based roles are mainly based at the workplace, with the option to work from home for up to two days a week, depending on service needs.

Home based roles are mainly based at home, with the expectation of attending the workplace up to one day a week.

The working arrangement for each role is set by the manager, based on service requirements.

Job Introduction

We’re recruiting a Building Surveyor – Housing to join our Housing Maintenance and Investment team.

As part of our Housing Maintenance and Investment service, you’ll play a key role in maintaining, improving and investing in our housing portfolio. You’ll undertake a wide range of building surveying and project management activities, helping to ensure our homes remain safe, well-maintained and compliant with regulatory requirements.

This rewarding role is ideal for an experienced building surveying professional who enjoys working with residents, contractors and colleagues to deliver high-quality housing improvements and achieve positive outcomes for local people.

Site-Based role

This is a Site-Based role, and you’ll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Ideal Candidate
  • A degree in Building Surveying and membership of a recognised professional body such as the Chartered Institute of Building or the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, or a commitment to achieve full membership within an agreed timeframe, together with demonstrable post-qualification experience.
  • With strong knowledge of housing-related legislation and standards, you’ll be confident applying building regulations, fire safety and building safety requirements when undertaking inspections and surveys.
  • Experienced in managing competing priorities, you’ll be organised, methodical and able to deliver high-quality work within demanding timescales.
  • A natural problem solver who can assess risk, make sound decisions and identify practical solutions to complex property-related issues.
  • Comfortable building positive relationships with residents, contractors and colleagues while providing clear advice and technical guidance.

Full UK Driving Licence and access to a vehicle

To be successful in this role, you’ll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we’ll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use.
