The Key attributes that we are looking for:
Here is a story from Emily, a colleague who started in this role and has now progressed to her desired career as a Child Wellbeing Practitioner in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service .
Tell me about your career journey so far, and the role that you do at NCC / how long you've worked here?
I worked in various roles across different sectors after completing my undergraduate Psychology degree, none of the jobs in Market Research or Retail were quite clicking, but I knew I wanted to work within mental health eventually. I saw a role advertised to work in the administration side of Nottingham City CAMHS and thought it would be a great opportunity to see the way the service worked and start working within a field that I was passionate about before I had the specific mental health qualifications or training needed to be a practitioner.
I worked as a BSO for nearly four years and trained and volunteered as a Childline Counsellor in that time, I then successfully applied for a recruit to train Children's Wellbeing Practitioner role within the team. This involved studying for a fully funded postgraduate diploma alongside working as a trainee Children's Wellbeing Practitioner for a year. Following completion of the course I stayed on with the team and started as a Qualified Children's Wellbeing Practitioner in January.
Why did you join NCC, what makes you stay?
I joined NCC as I saw an opportunity to start working in a field I was passionate about (mental health) and saw potential to grow my understanding of the services and build my career from there.
The families and children that I've worked with over my time with CAMHS and finding the role so rewarding are a big part of what makes me stay in NCC.
I have been lucky enough to have some great progression opportunities since starting as a BSO and there is still more potential for further training ahead. The CAMHS team are also focused on continuing the professional development of their practitioners which is another reason
How would you describe the culture here?
The CAMHS Team are very supportive and managers are often thinking about progression opportunities and offering lots of additional training sessions.
What training / development / progression have you benefitted from here?
I completed a Post Graduate Diploma with the University of Reading to become a Qualified Children's Wellbeing Practitioner. This allowed me to progress from a BSO role on SPA to a CWP role working directly with children, young people and parents and carers to support CYP with their mental health.
I have also benefitted from the regular espresso learning training that is offered within the CAMHS Team, utilising the experience and skills the team has.
What are you most proud of working here?
Some of the positive changes I've seen in the CYP I've worked with within my time working for CAMHS makes me feel very proud and it's very rewarding.
What 3 words would you use to describe what it's like working at NCC?
Rewarding, supportive, and busy!
What would you say to anyone considering a career in social care at NCC?
Go for it, the development opportunities are there, and it can be a great foot in the door opportunity to develop a career in an area you really care about.
A DBS enhanced check for a regulated activity is required for this post.
