Job Summary

This role supports UKHSA Public Health Microbiology (PHM), including the Clinical Laboratory Network and PHM Reference services. UKHSA Public Health Laboratories operate a managed network across the country, delivering microbiology diagnostic services, surveillance, and outbreak control. The network includes sites in Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester, and collaborating centres in Brighton, Newcastle, Leeds, and Southampton, as well as environmental labs in London, Porton, and York.

Job Description

The post holder will provide business support under the line management of the Senior Business Manager, supporting operations within UKHSA Public Health Microbiology Services. This role does not include line management responsibilities but involves working alongside other support staff under the leadership of the Head of Business Operations.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Assist in preparing reports and presentations for UKHSA, NHS, and program boards.
  2. Provide diary management and organize meetings for senior leadership.
  3. Identify and recommend process improvements.
  4. Coordinate business submissions, audits, and risk registers.
  5. Support estates, facilities, and IT infrastructure where needed.
  6. Maintain equipment registers and business continuity plans.
  7. Support health and safety policy maintenance and stakeholder inquiries.
Financial and Resource Management
  1. Assist with budget setting and monitoring.
  2. Support procurement activities and management of contracts and capital purchases.
Human Resources Management
  1. Support training, development, and recruitment activities.
  2. Contribute to staff induction processes.
Planning and Organisation
  1. Provide administrative support for boards, committees, and quality monitoring.
  2. Assist in planning for meetings and projects, maintaining records, and monitoring KPIs.
Leadership and Management
  1. Work under the line management of the Senior Business Manager.
  2. Support training, development, and staff surveys.
