Hours:Part-Time, 16 or 24 hours per week, Working on a shift pattern to be determined but within the hours of 08.00-22.00 between Monday-Sunday
Additional hours may be necessary in order to fulfil the requirements of the post
Salary:£28,808 pro rata per annum
Role Summary
The Theatre Operations Team are collectively responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the building day-to-day. The Building Facilities Assistant will provide practical support in maintaining and upkeep of the historic Grade II listed building. They will act as a first point of contact for any on the ground issues or queries related to the building and maintenance.

Operations Director, Head of Building Operations, Building Facilities Manager, Building Facilities Technicians, Head of Front of House Operations, Operations Administration Manager, Operations Administration Coordinator, Front of House Operations Coordinator, Bar Operations Manager and Health, Safety & Compliance Manager.
In addition, the role will work closely with the Theatre’s Hard FM external contractor who are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Theatre’s Hard FM infrastructure.
Areas of responsibility
The Building Facilities Assistantwill be responsible for:
• Undertaking a range of maintenance and fabric tasks to aid the upkeep of our building.
• Carrying out routine monitoring of building systems and equipment, including the BMS system
• Under the supervision of the Building Facilities Manager, practical maintenance and upkeep of our auditorium space, including auditorium seat repairs and numbering, including change overs as required.
• Taking responsibility as a Fire Marshall during evacuations and performing evacuation duties were required.
• Monitoring and responding to Radio requests for Building and Facilities related tasks.
• Supervising external maintenance contractors when working on site, providing site inductions at the start of their work(s), and ensuring that they adhere to our safe working policies and procedures.
• Taking receipt of deliveries and assisting with moving equipment and assets around the organisation’s premises.
• Preparing spaces, equipment, furniture, and the format of rooms ready for use.
• Carrying out and logging specified building, H&S, environmental, and accessibility checks.
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current and new safe working practices and adhere to them.
• Providing cover for the Building Facilities Manager as required.
• Assisting the Building Facilities Manager in preparing method statements and risk assessments for in house works, ensuring these are reviewed when required.
• Assisting the Building Facilities Manager in ensuring that our COSHH records (inventories, risk assessments, data sheet) records are kept up to date and reviewed regularly.
• Assisting with fire, health & safety and any other relevant training for staff and contractors as requested by the Operations Director, Head of Building Operations and Head of FOH Operations.
• Completing reactive requests from the site relating to the Building and Facilities.
• When required, operating the Building Management System – for which training will be provided.
• Assisting the Head of Building Operations and Operations Administration Manager with longer term objectives, such as the goal to reduce energy and carbon emissions, by identifying any patterns or practices that could be improved.
• Assisting with the undertaking of scheduled preventative maintenance work and checks.
• Acting as a First Aider and attending refresher training courses when required.
• Acting as a keyholder and Out of Hours Emergency Contact, responding as required.
• Working collaboratively with The Old Vic’s third-party Facilities Management company.
• Carrying out and logging specified building, H&S, environmental, and accessibility checks.
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of current and new safe working practices and adhering to them.
This is not an exhaustive list of duties and the Theatre’s management may, at any time, allocate other tasks which are of a similar nature or level.
Person Specification
Essential
• Experience in a similar maintenance or technician role, preferably within facilities or building operations.
• Basic understanding of UK building regulations and health and safety requirements.
• Technical qualifications or certifications are a plus, such as:
o City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2/3 in plumbing, electrical systems, or building services.
• Previous experience of working within a public-facing premises
• Comfortable working as part of a small team collaboratively, and working autonomously with minimal supervision
• Demonstrable experience of completing building maintenance tasks
• Good understanding of the safe and effective use of power and hand tools
• Able to multi-task, work to deadlines, identify priorities and prioritise work with competing demands.
• A ‘can do’ approach and positive relationship building skills across departments
• Able to use initiative and find pragmatic solutions
• Demonstrable continuous improvement approach to work
• IT literacy, with good experience of the Microsoft Office suite. (Training will be given on software programs as required.)
