Job summary

Amey is seeking a permanent General Building Engineer for the Ministry of Justice account at HMP Cardiff. The role is on-site with standard 39-hour weeks (8am-5pm, 1 hour lunch, 1 in 3 weekends 8am-4pm) and a 15% shift allowance.

You will perform maintenance across the site, including security systems and fire safety checks, working with engineers and independently. Prison Clearance will be supported by Amey.

Qualifications

  • Maintenance experience in general building services including safety systems.
  • Proficient with fire safety equipment and emergency systems.
  • Skilled in IT-based maintenance management tools.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure availability of critical parts and manage remedial tasks in CAFM.
  • Perform general maintenance and security system tasks (CCTV/alarms).
  • Conduct monthly checks of fire extinguishers, hydrants, hoses.
  • Complete quarterly RCD testing and inspect misting units.
  • Maintain fire doors and perform water risk testing and temperature checks.
  • Carry out monthly/annual emergency lighting checks.
  • Test smoke vents as required and perform other duties as needed.

Job description

We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a permanent General Building Engineer to join our Ministry of Justice (MoJ) account in HMP Cardiff, Knox Rd, Cardiff CF24 0UGThis role is based on-site.The standard hours of work are 39 Hours (8am-5pm with 1 hour lunch break, 1 in 3 weekend working 8am-4pm and 15% shift allowance)At Amey, we're supporting our justice client, His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by providing them with safe, clean and efficient prisons. By using our facilities management expertise, we help keep 60 secure premises across England and Wales running smoothly.General Building Engineer plays an important part in ensuring the planned and reactive maintenance work within the prisons is carried out in a safe, compliant and timely manner.

What you will do
  • Ensuring availability of critical parts for statutory tasks and managing remedial tasks in the CAFM system.
  • Performing general and semi-skilled maintenance activities, including security systems like CCTV and alarms.
  • Conducting monthly checks and tests of fire extinguisher equipment, fire hydrants, and hoses.
  • Completing quarterly RCD testing and inspecting Misting Units.
  • Maintaining fire doors and performing flushing and tap temperature tests as per water risk assessments.
  • Undertaking monthly and annual emergency lighting checks.
  • Checking and testing smoke vents as required.
  • Carrying out any other duties as required.

What makes this role unique is you will work alongside the engineers in all maintenance across the site as well as working independently. Prison Security Clearance will be required (Amey will support you through this process).

Ideally you will be qualified in multiple areas of maintenance as outlined above with experience in general building maintenance. In addition to this, it would be desirable if you have experience of working within a custodial environment with basic Health and Safety knowledge and exposure to building and system compliance, although this is not essential as we will provide you with the required development you need to bring you up to speed.
