Job summary

Bristol City Council is looking for a Bridges and Structures Highways Inspector to join the Bridges and Highway Structures Team. You will inspect, assess and investigate structures across Bristol's highway network, working with engineers, contractors and other stakeholders to keep assets safe and compliant with national standards.

This role requires relevant structures qualifications or experience, with delivery of projects and knowledge of structure assets.

Qualifications

  • Appropriate structures qualifications or relevant previous experience.
  • Experience with structures project delivery and design calculations.
  • Delivery of continuous performance improvement in highways structures.
  • Ability to work with the Highways group and major projects.
  • Customer focused with a willingness to learn.
  • Maritime operational moving bridge structures experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out inspections, condition assessments and investigations of structures across Bristol's highway network.
  • Work closely with engineers, contractors and stakeholders to maintain structures safely and to national standards.
  • Support annual city-wide structures and major capital works programmes.
  • Contribute to development of structural technology and asset management.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Bridges and Structures Highways Inspector to join Bristol City Councils Bridges and Highway Structures Team,

This is an exciting opportunity to work across a diverse portfolio of structures, including highway bridges, footbridges, retaining walls, culverts and associated highway infrastructure.

As a Bridge Inspector, you will be responsible for carrying out inspections, condition assessments and investigations of structures across Bristol's highway network. Working closely with engineers, contractors and other stakeholders, you will help ensure that structures are maintained safely, efficiently and in accordance with national standards.

We are looking for a competent and experienced officer to help the Team to deliver the structural requirements and disciplines on a variety of structural assets working within the Bridges and Structures Team and help keep our spectacular waterfront city on the move, from a maritime and Highway perspective.

The Highways Maintenance Group within the Transport Service is at the very forefront of the efforts being made by the City Council and other stakeholders to improve maintain and develop the transport service in our City, for the benefit of its citizens, businesses and visitors. Key to this is the effective maintenance and improvements/refurbishment to all the highway and authority owned estates within the public domain.

The Highways Group delivers its own work programmes, supports other City Council initiatives and major projects, and provides expert technical advice and front-line support to both internal and external agencies and individuals. There is considerable passion, technical experience and expertise within the Group to shape the future wellbeing, success and prosperity of our City.

Highway Maintenance Service consists of 5 Teams covering the City:

  • Area Highways Team
  • Strategic Highways Team
  • Bridges and Structures Team
  • Highway Electrical Assets Team
  • Assets and Contracts team

Each Team is managed by a separate Team Manager.

You should have appropriate structures qualifications or relevant previous experience along with some relevant structure’s asset management experience, to support the Bridges and structures, also including maritime operational moving bridge structures.

You will ideally have some relevant experience of structures project delivery, design calculations and compliance, delivering continuous performance improvement and the focused delivery of departmental and corporate priorities.

You will play an important role as part of the Team in the delivery of the annual city-wide structures and major capital works programmes and focused delivery of departmental and corporate priorities. The role will support development of structural technology advancements maintaining and improving the structure infrastructure within BCC estate. The role will involve working closely with the Highways group, other Transport services, Major Project team and to support the delivery of our ambitious agendas for growth and economic development.

The role will ensure the authority meets its statutory duty to maintain structures in accordance with the legal requirements therefore a safe and serviceable structures asset across the authority.

The role would suit an individual who has some degree of structural experience with some relevant experience of Highway structures assets and also some degree of Project Delivery and who thrives on learning, being part of a Delivery Team and loves responsibility, with continuous performance improvement and be customer focused. These are exciting times for the City and you will play a pivotal role as part of the Team in delivering, maintaining and improving the highways infrastructure needed to support our ambitious agendas for growth and economic development.
